On October 17, 2011, coinciding with the celebration of Turkmenistan’s 20th Independence Day, the Turkmenistan Television and Radio Broadcasting Center was officially inaugurated on a ridge of the Kopet Dag mountain range, approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Ashgabat. This 211-meter-tall structure became the tallest building in the country. The construction, carried out by the Turkish company Polimeks, was completed in a record time of 18 months with a staggering budget of $350 million.
The new television tower quickly became a defining symbol of Ashgabat. Its silhouette, highlighted by the immense eight-pointed Oguzkhan Star—which is recorded in the Guinness World Records—can be seen from every corner of the city. At night, the brightly illuminated star seems to hover above the Turkmen capital.
The Turkmenistan Television and Radio Broadcasting Center, located on the slopes of the Kopet Dag range, is a prominent feature visible from anywhere in the city. With its height of 211 meters, it ranks among the tallest structures in the country. The center stands at an altitude of 1,020 meters above sea level at the highest point of the eastern section of the «Health Trail» (Saglyk Ýoly), a multi-kilometer pedestrian route. To the east of the tower, the Ashgabat cable car line «Asma Ýoly» has been operating since 2006.
The center has earned its place in the Guinness World Records due to the monumental Oguzkhan Star, recognized as the largest architectural representation of a star in the world. The surface of this structure, which houses the floors of the main section, is covered in blue mirrored glass, making the enormous star visible from dozens of kilometers away.
