Yangikala canyon

Yangikala canyon

Located approximately 165 kilometers north of Balkanabat and 160 kilometers east of Turkmenbashi, the Yangikala Canyons stand as one of Turkmenistan’s most visually striking natural landmarks. The name «Yangikala,» which translates from Turkmen as «fire fortresses,» aptly captures the dramatic essence of these canyons.

The Yangikala Canyons are renowned for their spectacular cliffs, which are painted in a vivid palette of white, yellow, ocher, purple, and red. These hues have been sculpted into intricate formations by centuries of wind and rain, giving the canyons a fantastical appearance reminiscent of ancient stone fortresses. The most breathtaking views are revealed at sunset when the entire landscape is bathed in a fiery red glow, transforming the canyons into a mesmerizing spectacle.

Historically, the base of these canyons was submerged under an ancient sea. Today, visitors can traverse this natural landscape, which resembles an open-air gallery of sculpted earth. The canyon walls, while captivating, are made of compressed soil that can easily flake away, making it important to avoid touching the formations to preserve their delicate structures.

The Yangikala Canyons offer an ideal setting for hiking and camping, with the opportunity to spend nights under the stars in this remote and rugged terrain. It is also well-suited for jeep safaris, allowing adventurers to explore the canyons’ diverse and striking features. Despite its allure, the Yangikala Canyons are not typically included in standard tour itineraries. Therefore, it is advisable to make arrangements in advance with a tour operator to ensure a visit to this extraordinary natural wonder.
