The Lebap Regional History and Ethnography Museum

Turkmenabat Museum (new building)

The Lebap Regional History and Ethnography Museum has been a cultural cornerstone since its establishment in 1967. Initially housed in the Hajji Malik Mosque, a historic building located in the heart of Turkmenabat, the museum served as a repository of local history and culture for decades. However, in 2011, the museum was relocated to a new, larger building. Unfortunately, the old mosque, now in a state of disrepair, faces the threat of demolition.

A local resident expressed concern over the neglect of the historic mosque, stating, «This is our landmark, our history. Some believe that the disregard for the former mosque carries a hint of nationalism. The authorities may neglect the building because it was constructed during the era of the Emirate of Bukhara, reminding them of the Uzbek heritage.»

The museum’s collection boasts over 20,000 exhibits, including traditional clothing, carpets, women’s jewelry, household items, ancient musical instruments, weapons, and samples of the region’s flora and fauna. The museum also features paintings, ceramics, and sculptures by local artists, as well as historical documents related to the region.

The ethnography section showcases the material and cultural values associated with the ancient lifestyle of the local people. The exhibits highlight agriculture, animal husbandry, craftsmanship, weaving, and the vibrant Eastern bazaar that thrived along the Silk Road for millennia. Visitors are particularly fascinated by the jewelry, carpets, copper, clay, and wooden utensils, traditional clothing made from keteni fabric, intricately patterned women’s cloaks, musical instruments, and tools used in everyday life.

In the nature section, the unique plant and animal life of the Repetek, Amu Darya, and Koytendag reserves in the Lebap region are explored. A special exhibit features a 150-million-year-old dinosaur footprint fossil from the village of Khojapil.

The archaeology section offers intriguing insights into the ancient city of Amul, the mausoleums of Astana-baba and Alamberdar, the Idrisbaba madrasa, the Dayakhatyn caravanserai, and the Dargangala monument. It also displays ceramic artifacts, clay figurines of women, remnants of ivory, and hums (large clay vessels) that offer a glimpse into the region’s distant past.
