Established in 1997, the Jeyran Ecocenter was founded with the primary goal of breeding and protecting rare and endangered species of animals. Situated in the south-western part of the Kyzyl-Kum Desert, approximately 42 kilometers from Bukhara, the center holds the status of a protected natural area and operates under the jurisdiction of the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Over the past three decades, the Jeyran Ecocenter has gained recognition as one of the most effective breeding centers for rare hoofed mammals. The center has successfully established viable populations of several vulnerable and endangered species, including the Jeyran (Gazella subgutturosa subgutturosa), the endangered Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus Pallas), and the critically endangered Przewalski horse (Equus przewalskii), whose global population is estimated to be around 3,000 individuals.
