St. Daniel Mausoleum

The Mausoleum of St. Daniel in Samarkand stands as a unique beacon of unity, revered by followers of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism alike. Nestled on the outskirts of the ancient settlement of Afrasiab, northeast of Samarkand, the mausoleum is perched atop a hill, overlooking the tranquil flow of the Siab River. The structure itself is a remarkable sight, with its elongated five-domed silhouette stretching across the hill’s crest, housing a tomb that measures an impressive 18 meters in length.

Surrounding the resting place of the Old Testament prophet known as Daniel, Daniiel, or Doniyar, a tapestry of legends and theories has been woven through time. Some believe that the remains were transported to this site by early Christians, while others contend that the directive came from the legendary medieval conqueror, Amir Timur, also known as Tamerlane.

The contents of the tomb are shrouded in mystery, with conflicting accounts ranging from the burial of St. Daniel’s arm to the presence of merely a handful of sacred soil from the saint’s original grave. Adding to the enigma is the dual identity associated with the remains: one being the prophet Daniel, and the other Khoja Doniyar, a companion of Kusama ibn ‘Abbas, who is entombed at the nearby Shah-i-Zinda.

Myths also swirl around the size of the grave. One belief holds that the holy relics within grow incrementally each year. Another suggests that the tomb’s considerable size is a deliberate measure to obscure the exact location of the remains, thus safeguarding them from potential theft.
