Built in the Dorut-Tillavat Memorial complex directly opposite the Shamsiddin Kulol Mausoleum, the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque was constructed between 1435 and 1436. It stands as the largest Friday mosque in Shakhrisabz. An inscription on the mosque’s portal reveals that Ulugbek commissioned the construction in honor of his father, Shakhruh.
The mosque’s structure is topped by an enormous dome adorned with blue ceramic tiles, which inspired its name, Kok-Gumbaz, meaning «Blue Dome.» Encircling the dome’s tholobate, an inscription crafted from white glazed tiles reads, «Sovereignty belongs to Allah, wealth belongs to Allah.»
The interior of the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque features a nearly square layout with four deep niches oriented towards the cardinal directions. The walls are entirely covered with ganch stucco and decorated with intricate patterns in dark and light blue, creating a visually captivating design.
