Suvtushar Waterfall

Suvtushar waterfall

Perched at an elevation of over 2,000 meters above sea level, the magnificent Suvtushar Waterfall graces the Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan, nestled on the border of the Gissar Nature Reserve. Located just 8 kilometers from the quaint village of Suvtushar and 50 kilometers from the district center of Shakhrisabz, this breathtaking natural wonder is affectionately referred to by locals as the “milk waterfall.”

The small Suvtushar River has carved a narrow channel through the karst massif, cascading dramatically down a towering cliff. The waterfall plunges from an impressive height of 30 meters, continuing its descent over a series of smaller ledges into the verdant valley below. While local gamekeepers often claim the waterfall’s height reaches 80 meters, this is a contentious point, as the lower cascades do not appear entirely vertical. However, if one measures the drop from the top of the cliff to the horizontal stretch of the river, this claim may indeed hold some truth.

The waterfall is particularly stunning in the spring when the melting snows of the Gissar Mountains swell its flow. During this season, Suvtushar rivals the powerful canyon waterfalls of Angren, with its thunderous roar echoing for several kilometers. The mist created by the waterfall can be felt from dozens of meters away, creating a captivating atmosphere.

In winter, the Suvtushar Waterfall takes on a different charm, as it freezes completely, transforming into a dazzling spectacle of intricate ice cascades. The contrast of its icy beauty against the stark winter landscape offers a breathtaking sight, making Suvtushar a year-round marvel for those who venture to witness its splendor.
