Gulkam Canyon

Gulkam Canyon, Chimgan Mountains
Gulkam Canyon, Chimgan Mountains

Gulkam Canyon, a breathtaking natural wonder in the Greater Chimgan Mountains, is a testament to the sculpting power of nature. Over millions of years, the small but persistent Gulkamsay River has carved this stunning, narrow canyon with cliffs towering hundreds of feet high. The canyon’s walls are so steep that sunlight only reaches its depths around midday, creating a dramatic and enchanting atmosphere.

This picturesque canyon attracts a steady stream of visitors, ranging from nature enthusiasts to thrill-seekers. While some adventurers opt to camp near the canyon’s entrance, others prefer a one-day tour from Tashkent, making it a versatile destination for different types of travelers.

The trek to Gulkam Canyon starts between Chimgan village and the local tourist camp, known as Turbaza. The initial part of the journey leads to the Pesochniy (Sandy) Pass at an elevation of 1,820 meters. From here, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Chimgan Mountains before descending into the Gulkamsay River gorge. This segment of the route, which takes approximately two hours to complete, demands a good level of physical fitness and endurance.

At first glance, Gulkam Canyon might seem unassuming, with a modest river flowing between two cliffs. However, as you venture deeper, the canyon reveals its true splendor. A notable highlight is a large boulder offering a vantage point to view a magnificent 10-meter-high waterfall. To reach the base of the waterfall, hikers must navigate a cliff ledge on the left side, often requiring the use of a rope unless they are adept at rock climbing.

The descent into the canyon involves navigating an almost vertical slope to reach several natural pools. For safety, a railing is provided, allowing visitors to traverse the rocks and ledges without getting wet. Although this portion of the route is relatively short, it is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling parts of the journey.

As you progress, you will encounter a memorial on the rock, a poignant reminder of the canyon’s potential dangers. In 2006, a mudflow tragically claimed the lives of several tourists who ventured into the canyon during a period of heavy rains. This serves as a crucial reminder to always check weather conditions before planning a visit.

After the extreme section, the canyon continues for several hundred meters before the cliffs gradually diverge. At this point, the landscape opens up to small hills with the Charvak Reservoir visible in the distance. The full trek through Gulkam Canyon is an exhilarating adventure, but for those seeking a less strenuous experience, alternative routes are available that still offer glimpses of the canyon’s beauty.

Gulkam Canyon is a natural treasure in Uzbekistan, offering a blend of stunning landscapes, challenging trails, and serene spots for relaxation. Whether you are an experienced hiker looking for an adventure or a casual visitor seeking to enjoy the natural beauty, Gulkam Canyon provides an unforgettable experience.
