Gulkam Canyon, a breathtaking natural wonder in the Greater Chimgan Mountains, is a testament to the sculpting power of nature. Over millions of years, the small but persistent Gulkamsay River has carved this stunning, narrow canyon with cliffs towering hundreds of feet high. The canyon’s walls are so steep that sunlight only reaches its depths around midday, creating a dramatic and enchanting atmosphere.
This picturesque canyon attracts a steady stream of visitors, ranging from nature enthusiasts to thrill-seekers. While some adventurers opt to camp near the canyon’s entrance, others prefer a one-day tour from Tashkent, making it a versatile destination for different types of travelers.
The trek to Gulkam Canyon starts between Chimgan village and the local tourist camp, known as Turbaza. The initial part of the journey leads to the Pesochniy (Sandy) Pass at an elevation of 1,820 meters. From here, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Chimgan Mountains before descending into the Gulkamsay River gorge. This segment of the route, which takes approximately two hours to complete, demands a good level of physical fitness and endurance.
