Discover Mangystau, one of Kazakhstan’s most spectacular and least conventional destinations, where vast deserts, dramatic cliffs, salt flats, ancient sacred sites and extraordinary rock formations create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Central Asia. Often described as an open-air museum of planetary history, Mangystau reveals an extraordinary geological story shaped by the ancient Tethys Ocean, tectonic forces and millions of years of erosion.
Our Mangystau tours are designed for travellers who want to go beyond traditional sightseeing and experience a destination that still feels remote, authentic and genuinely adventurous. The Caspian Oasis: Aktau is a modern, coastal desert city and the capital of the Mangystau Region. It sits directly on the shores of the striking blue Caspian Sea, offering a unique contrast between white desert cliffs and sandy beaches.
Founded in the 1960s and originally called Shevchenko—in honor of the 19th-century Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko exiled to Mangystau—the city was renamed Aktau in 1991. This unique history explains why the international airport code remains SCO.
Aktau offers excellent modern infrastructure, featuring 5-star seaside resorts, international hotels, and vibrant restaurants. It serves as the vital starting and ending base camp where 4×4 expeditions stock up on fuel, water, and food before heading into the Mangystau tours.
