Azerbaijan and Georgia Relaunch Daily Baku–Tbilisi Train Service

Passenger rail service between Baku and Tbilisi is set to resume after a six-year hiatus, according to an announcement from the Georgian government administration.

Daily passenger trains connecting the two capitals will begin operating on May 26, restoring one of the most convenient and scenic travel routes in the South Caucasus.

The decision follows a protocol signed with the Azerbaijani side during Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s official visit to Baku, within the framework of the Bilateral Coordination Council.

According to a preliminary agreement reached between Azerbaijan Railways and Georgian Railway, trains on the Baku–Tbilisi–Baku route will depart daily from Baku at 23:10, arriving in Tbilisi at 08:41 the following morning. Trains departing from Tbilisi will leave at 21:00 and arrive in Baku at 06:24 the next day.

On the Azerbaijani side, trains will stop at Baku Railway Station, Bilajari, Yevlakh, Ganja, Aghstafa, and Boyuk Kesik. In Georgia, scheduled stops will include Gardabani and Tbilisi Railway Station.

Rail connections between Baku and Tbilisi were suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the return of train services, Azerbaijan’s land borders remain officially closed, while the country continues to operate under a special quarantine regime. At present, international departures from Azerbaijan are still largely limited to air travel.

As of May 2026, ticket prices for the Baku–Tbilisi Railway train vary depending on the class of carriage. Fares on the Baku–Tbilisi Railway in the Comfort class start from 51 Azerbaijani manats and vary depending on the travel distance. The minimum one-way ticket prices are as follows:

  • From Baku to Tbilisi — 81 manats (approximately $48);
  • From Yevlakh — 67 manats ($39);
  • From Ganja — 62 manats ($36);
  • From Aghstafa — 57 manats ($34).

The fare from Boyuk Kesik station to Gardabani station is 51 manats ($30).

These prices may change following the official launch of the renewed rail service. Additional details regarding ticket sales and travel procedures are expected to be announced in the coming days.
