It’s worth mentioning that the striking layers of colorful rock formations found in Khizi are quite rare. To witness similar cliffs, one would have to travel far beyond central Russia, perhaps to Latin America, Peru, or China. In fact, such a phenomenon occurs in only one other location: Death Valley in the United States.
The agate slopes are characterized by small elevations that offer mesmerizing views from their summits. The highest peaks in this area are Mount Dyubrar, standing at 2,203 meters above sea level, and Mount Saraku, which reaches 958 meters. This region is remarkable for its otherworldly landscapes, showcasing stunning panoramas of semi-desert steppes and pristine forests. The hills are adorned with unusual colors, featuring intricate patterns and wavy stripes in shades of yellow-red, golden, orange, and brown.
According to scientists, these unique landscapes were formed due to the effects of high temperatures on various layers of geological rock. The vibrant colors and textures closely resemble those of a type of semi-precious stone known as agate, which is how the hills earned their name. At first glance, they may appear rocky, but as you walk upon them, you’ll discover that they consist of clayey soil mixed with stones.
These extraterrestrial landscapes are visible from the highway leading to the Russian border. Located on the southern side of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, in an area known as Khizi, they lie just 104 kilometers from Baku. Reaching this stunning site is relatively easy by car, as the road is in good condition. Travel towards the village of Gilyazy, then turn and continue for another 18 kilometers toward Khizi. Traveling by public transport to this location can be a bit more challenging. To get there, you’ll need to catch a bus from the Baku bus station heading to the district center of Guba. It’s advisable to disembark at the turnoff for Gilyazy and then take a taxi to the village of Tyazyakand.
