Located just 20 kilometers from the capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku, Heydar Aliyev International Airport serves as the country’s primary air gateway and is the busiest airport in the Caucasus region. Named after Heydar Aliyev, the third president of Azerbaijan, the airport was previously known as Bina International Airport until its renaming in 2004.
With an annual passenger traffic of approximately 4 million, the airport is equipped with two runways, measuring 4,000 meters and 3,200 meters in length, to facilitate the arrival and departure of flights. The passenger terminals operate around the clock, ensuring convenience for travelers at any hour. Flight departure information is readily available on the official website under the “Flights” section, where you can also check arrivals by selecting the “Arrival” category for the current day’s flights.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport features two passenger terminals:
Terminal 1
This terminal was constructed on the site of the old Soviet-era terminal and is celebrated as an architectural marvel in the futuristic style. Designed by the Turkish firm Autoban, Terminal 1 spans four floors and covers 65,000 square meters, accommodating up to 3 million passengers annually. Its striking triangular structure boasts a semi-transparent roof, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. Inside, passengers will find cafes, restaurants, relaxation areas, and play zones for children, all designed with wooden cocoon-like half-spheres that create a stylish atmosphere. The terminal is equipped with telescopic bridges, enabling it to service up to 12 aircraft simultaneously. Additionally, the building incorporates cutting-edge technology that automates many operational processes. In 2018, Terminal 1 received a prestigious “5-star” rating from a British consulting agency.
Terminal 2
This terminal caters to domestic flights (accessible via the southern entrance) and low-cost airlines (via the northern entrance), ensuring a streamlined experience for all travelers.
The journey from the airport to the city center typically takes 25 to 30 minutes.
Aeroexpress Bus
The Baku-Airport bus operates 24/7, with a travel time of approximately 30 minutes to its final stop. The route connects Heydar Aliyev International Airport to the 28 May Metro Station and the Central Railway Station, with a brief stop at Korgolu Metro Station along the way. The comfortable buses are equipped with Wi-Fi, restrooms, and a mini-kitchen with a refrigerator, allowing passengers to prepare tea, for example. Payment is made via a special travel card, as cash is not accepted. Tickets can be purchased at the BakıKart terminals located just outside the airport building, with a one-way fare costing 1.5 AZN.
Taxi and Transfers
Official taxis can be booked at designated points operated by authorized companies, located outside the passenger terminals. There is a specific pickup area for official services, where private taxi drivers are not permitted to park. Follow the “OFFICIAL TAXI” signs on the pavement to access these vehicles. Additionally, you can request a taxi through mobile apps for added convenience.
Car rental services are also available within the airport terminal, allowing you to book a vehicle in advance or arrange one on-site for your convenience.
