A landmark of national significance, State Flag Square is located near the main base of the Azerbaijani Navy. This impressive site features the national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan, accompanied by state symbols such as the coat of arms, the national anthem, and a map of Azerbaijan, all crafted from gilded bronze.
Constructed between 2007 and 2010, State Flag Square is a relatively new addition to Baku’s attractions, situated in the suburban area of Bayil and encompassing a vast area of 60 hectares. The square not only serves as a patriotic symbol but also houses the Museum of the State Flag, which is designed in the shape of an eight-pointed star. This museum showcases a variety of artifacts, including orders, medals, currency, postage stamps, flags, and other exhibits that narrate the rich history of the country.
Until 2011, the flagpole erected at the square held the title of the tallest in the world, standing at an impressive 162 meters, a record that was even recognized by the Guinness World Records. However, this record was later surpassed by a flagpole in Dushanbe. The dimensions of the flag itself are equally astounding, measuring 75 by 35 meters and weighing approximately 350 kilograms.
Baku is known for its strong winds, yet even during gusty conditions, the flag appears to flutter gracefully, creating an illusion of slow motion due to its considerable weight. This captivating sight not only exemplifies national pride but also serves as a testament to the architectural and artistic achievement of Azerbaijan.
