The Museum of Modern Art in Baku stands as one of the city’s youngest cultural institutions, having opened its doors in 2009. Its establishment was made possible through the dedicated efforts of its organizer, Mehriban Aliyeva, the First Lady of Azerbaijan. The museum embodies the principle of open space, free from rigid boundaries in its exhibitions, a concept that is further emphasized by its unique architectural design. The building features no sharp corners, with walls that slope at varying angles in different rooms, and open passages throughout. These architectural nuances symbolize constant movement and evolution, a theme that immediately captures the attention of visitors. This innovative vision was brought to life by the project’s developer, exhibition curator, and renowned artist, Altay Sadikhzade. Even the layout of the floors reflects a sense of unity and continuity, achieved through the art installation “The Forgotten Staircase,” which seamlessly connects the museum’s two levels.
The museum’s open-space concept allows visitors to explore a diverse range of artistic works and original conceptual pieces. The collection includes modernist works from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as masterpieces by some of the 20th century’s greatest painters, such as Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Picasso.
At the heart of the museum’s exhibitions is a collection of the finest works and sculptures by national artists who have embraced avant-garde art from the mid-20th century to the present day. The museum’s holdings include approximately 800 pieces, ranging from figurative art by artists like Huseyn Aliyev and Nadir Kasumov to avant-garde works by A. Murad and E. Mammadov, among others.
The museum building itself, painted in white, serves as a unique artistic object. Exhibitions extend beyond the traditional gallery spaces, spilling into areas such as the art café, restaurant, and outdoor spaces. The museum also hosts exhibitions of children’s art, a video corner, spaces for individual exhibitions, a library section, and a small shop.
Two separate rooms are dedicated to the “Metropolis” gallery, showcasing extensive collections of works by contemporary artists, which are available for purchase.
One of the museum’s most intriguing sections is dedicated to the theme of “unknown” Soviet-era art. Thanks to the efforts of the museum’s staff, the names of artists who were at risk of being forgotten have been preserved, ensuring their contributions to art history are remembered.
