Hi everyone,
I’m planning a trip to the Darwaza Gas Crater from Uzbekistan this coming February and have a few questions:

  1. Are the yurt camps at Darwaza operational?
  2. Do they have heating, and if so, what kind?
  3. How cold does it typically get in February? Is it comfortable staying in the yurts at that time of year?
  4. Lastly, how long is the journey from Kunya-Urgench to Darwaza?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

As of December 15, 2024, the traditional Turkmen yurt camps near the Darwaza Gas Crater were up and running, but you’ll need to book in advance, especially during peak seasons or holidays.

  • Heating: The yurts are heated with fire stoves fueled by saxaul wood, which locals believe has calming and even healing properties when burned. The warmth from these heaters is enough to keep the yurts cozy, even on chilly nights.
  • Temperature in February: Based on past years, daytime temperatures are typically above 0°C (32°F), but nights can dip below freezing. With a properly heated yurt, you should be comfortable, but it’s always a good idea to pack warm layers and a good sleeping bag just in case.
  • Travel Time from Kunya-Urgench: The road between Kunya-Urgench and Darwaza has been repaired recently, making the journey much smoother than before. Depending on your driver’s experience and the road conditions, it usually takes 3-5 hours.
