It's become quite common for travelers to know Issyk-Kul Lake as the main highlight of Kyrgyzstan. However, many are unaware of the lesser-known, yet equally fascinating destinations that surround this majestic body of water. Below, I’ve compiled a list of some lesser-known spots that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone near the lake. Trust me, you won't regret exploring these gems!

The Dead Lake
Located on the southern shore, about 75 km from the town of Balykchi, this spot is undergoing some roadwork at the moment, so be prepared for a bumpy ride with a lot of dust. A small entrance fee (50 soms) is charged, but the area is equipped with showers, toilets, yurts for overnight stays, and a café. The lake has a high concentration of salt and healing mud, perfect for a therapeutic dip. Coordinates: [Dead Lake Location]

The Fairy Tale Canyons
This is an absolutely stunning location! Situated on the southern shore of the lake, 300 km from Bishkek (roughly 5 hours by car) and 130 km from Balykchi. A dusty dirt road takes you to this place, but the beauty makes it worth the effort. Be cautious as the road is narrow with many turns, and you'll need to share it with other vehicles! The fairytale-like landscape is unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere. Coordinates: Fairy Tale Canyons Location

Ayu-Tor Hot Springs
The road here is quite rugged with many potholes and requires crossing a river, but don’t worry—it’s not deep (about 30 cm), and the ford is well-trodden. The area sits at about 2500 meters above sea level and only operates in the summer. It's a hidden gem for those who enjoy outdoor adventures. Coordinates: [Ayu-Tor Hot Springs Location]

Jeti-Ohuz Resort
Located 430 km north of Bishkek, 390 km south, and only 30 km from Karakol, this resort is named after the Seven Bulls, referring to the seven red mountains split by cracks. The area offers a picturesque landscape, and the resort has a radon-mineral water pool, perfect for treating skin conditions. There are various accommodations to suit different budgets. Be cautious about traveling in heavy rain, as mudslides can block the road. Although I won’t post my photos here (for privacy reasons), there are plenty online, including a few of mine! Barskoon Gorge
Located 350 km from Bishkek, this gorge is famous for its stunning waterfalls and thick pine forests. It’s also home to the largest gold mine in Kyrgyzstan, Kumtor. The gorge stretches for about 30 km and reaches up to the high-altitude plateau of Arabel. With waterfalls like "Tears of the Leopard" and "Champagne Splash," this place is a favorite among visitors. If you're interested in cultural landmarks, don’t miss the ancient settlement of Tagai-Biya, a significant historical site. Coordinates: [Barskoon Gorge Location]

Karakol Town
This charming little town is worth at least two days of your time. It has a unique atmosphere that blends the quiet, steady pace of the 1980s USSR with the bold energy of the 1990s, all while maintaining a modern touch. It's a hub for mountain climbers and trekkers, with the Karakol ski resort just 7 km away. Founded in 1869 by Baron Kaulbars, Karakol served as a military and administrative center for caravan trade. The town's mix of Soviet-era buildings and modern structures adds to its charm.
Must-see attractions include:

  • The Holy Trinity Cathedral
  • The Dungan Mosque
  • The Bugue-Ene Zoo
  • The Historical Museum
  • The Nikolai Przhevalsky Museum
  • Victory Park
Be sure to try the famous Ashlan-Fu, a local dish!
From Karakol, you can find transport to the breathtaking Altyn-Arashan Gorge, a haven for hiking and horseback riding enthusiasts.

Armenian Brothers Monastery
Located at the northeastern edge of Issyk-Kul Lake, near the village of Kurmenty, this ancient monastery complex, dating back to the 13th century, is partially preserved in a multi-tiered system of caves carved into the rock. Legend has it that the relics of the apostle Matthew are buried here. Archaeological research started in 2005, and findings suggest the presence of early Christian communities, likely Armenians. It's an incredible site for those intrigued by history. The monastery is located on private property, so make sure to contact the owner in advance to arrange a visit. Coordinates: [Armenian Brothers Monastery Location] 42.766191, 78.247851

Semenovskoye Gorge
Situated on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, 40 km east of Cholpon-Ata, this gorge offers an exhilarating experience with its rugged roads and scenic views. The Ak-Suu River flows through the gorge, offering crystal-clear glacial waters. For those who love adventure, the area promises unforgettable experiences. Coordinates: Semenovskoye Gorge Location. From here, after reaching the end of the gorge you can continue to no less picturesque Grigoriev Gorge and go down the gorge back to Issyk Kul.

These locations, though lesser-known, are perfect for travelers seeking a more unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure around Issyk-Kul Lake. Trust me, these places will leave a lasting impression!
