I actually bought my SIM card at the airport because I was travelling onwards around Azerbaijan and wanted mobile data immediately. The whole process took only a few minutes, so either option works depending on your plans.

We'll be landing in Baku at around 00:45 and staying near Fountain Square. There will be two of us, each with one suitcase.

Don't worry too much before arriving. Baku Airport is one of the easiest airports I've used in the region. Whether you choose the Airport Express Bus, Bolt or the official airport taxi, you'll probably be in the city within half an hour to forty minutes. The important thing is simply to compare your options instead of jumping into the first car that's offered.

We stayed in the Old City, so after taking the Airport Express Bus we still needed a short taxi ride because the streets there are difficult to access by larger vehicles anyway. Even with that extra transfer, the total cost was still very reasonable.

For anyone arriving after a very long flight, I'd say don't make the decision before you travel. Compare the prices once you've landed. If Bolt is much cheaper, use it. If the difference is only a few manats, take the official airport taxi and get to your hotel without any extra hassle. That's what we've done on our last two visits.

We usually travel with hand luggage only, so our priority is getting into the city as cheaply as possible. The Airport Express Bus has become our default choice. It's straightforward, comfortable, and by the time we've collected our bags and walked outside, the next departure is usually not far away.

Our experience was the opposite. We landed after a delayed flight, were both exhausted and just wanted to get to bed. The official Airport Taxi turned out to be the easiest option. No waiting, no comparing prices, no searching for the pickup point. Within a few minutes we were already on our way.

Can someone explain where exactly the Airport Express Bus stops in the city? I'm trying to decide whether it's practical for our hotel.

It depends where you're staying, but if your accommodation is somewhere around the city centre it's usually a good option. If you're staying farther away, just add a short taxi ride from the final stop. That's still how many travellers save money.

Another thing worth mentioning is that traffic can vary a lot depending on the time of day. We arrived on a Sunday morning and reached the hotel much quicker than we expected. Friends of ours landed on a weekday evening and spent considerably longer on the road. Whatever transport you choose, allow a little flexibility.
