Good afternoon. Could you please tell me whether it is necessary to obtain a permit to visit the Chon-Kemin Gorge, with further travel along the road over the Koy-Aryk Pass, which then returns to Lake Issyk-Kul? I keep coming across conflicting information about this. Thanks in advance.

If you are going to drive through the Chon-Kemin Gorge, then yes, you need one.

Do I understand correctly that this applies if you go all the way to the end of it (to the place where it merges with the transit gorge)? And what kind of control is there, could you please tell me?

Through Kok-Oyrok only on foot or by horse. And only in summer. A permit is required. There is no border checkpoint, but patrols do appear. It’s 50/50.

@rolla I don’t know this for sure. When we were getting permits for Kol-Suu, it said “Chon-Kemin Gorge” there.

We’re on off-road motorcycles. We’d like to explore the area. Thanks!

Thank you! And where do you get it? At the border guard administration in Bishkek?

The ascent from the Issyk-Kul side is much easier than from the Chon-Kemin side.

On Zhibek Zholu 353, I think. The institution is called “Kyzmat.”
