Gudauri Ski Resort

Gudauri stands as the largest and most well-developed winter resort in Georgia, nestled along the stunning Georgian Military Highway, just 120 kilometers from Tbilisi and 310 kilometers from Kutaisi. Perched at a high altitude, it is the highest settlement along this scenic route, located near the breathtaking Cross Pass, which reaches an impressive 2,379 meters above sea level. The surrounding villages lie at lower elevations, adding to Gudauri’s unique allure.

The ideal time to enjoy a vacation in Gudauri is from late December through mid-April. Remarkably, in 2015, skiing was still possible as late as early May, even while Tbilisi and Batumi were already in full bloom. Thanks to the installation of snow cannons, the skiing season can be extended, especially when demand is high. These cannons effectively create artificial snow, ensuring that skiers can enjoy optimal conditions even when Mother Nature isn’t cooperating.

The resort boasts approximately 57 kilometers of pistes that cascade down the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. During the 2015-2016 season, visitors were treated to five state-of-the-art Doppelmayr chair lifts and a POMA gondola line, which whisk guests up to a maximum altitude of 3,307 meters. With the lowest lift starting at 1,990 meters, Gudauri offers an impressive vertical drop that caters to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.

In addition to its well-groomed slopes, Gudauri is becoming increasingly popular among thrill-seekers who crave extreme skiing and snowboarding experiences. Adventurers can explore the off-piste terrain near the ski lifts, particularly on the northern slopes of Mount Sadzele, which feature no official trails. The nearby mountains of Bidara and Chrdili also offer exhilarating opportunities for freeriding. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, heli-skiing tours and paragliding are available, providing an unforgettable way to experience the breathtaking landscape.

After a day on the slopes, Gudauri offers a vibrant après-ski scene. Visitors can indulge in a traditional Russian sauna, unwind at the spa, or enjoy a game of bowling or ping-pong. No trip to Gudauri would be complete without sampling the exquisite natural wines that Georgia is famous for, recognized by UNESCO as the cradle of wine. A delightful Georgian dinner, featuring traditional dishes paired with a glass of local wine by the fireplace, is the perfect way to relax and reflect on an exhilarating day of skiing.
