Svaneti is rapidly becoming a major destination for mountain enthusiasts, captivating visitors not only in the summer but also during the winter months. Traditionally, this remote and breathtaking region attracted tourists—especially those passionate about hiking and exploring ancient cultures—from July to late September. Now, the proud Svan people invite guests to experience their stunning homeland from late December through the end of April as well.
Nestled among towering mountain peaks, Svaneti is steeped in legends and myths that speak of sacred local traditions and ancient treasures hidden within its rugged terrain. This remarkable region is a must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in its beauty for several days. A winding serpentine road leads you to the heart of Svaneti: the charming town of Mestia. From this picturesque hub, a variety of routes to explore the wider region begin. Mestia serves as a convenient base for overnight stays, providing easy access to ski lifts, equipment rentals, marked pistes, and untouched slopes. Visitors can choose from simple guesthouses or cozy mid-range hotels for their accommodations.
The local Svans are adept at winter sports and mountaineering, skills that are essential for thriving in an area known for its heavy snowfall and mountainous terrain. The first ski resort in Svaneti, Hatsvali, is located just 8 kilometers from Mestia and has been operational for only a few years. The lower lift station sits at an altitude of 1,865 meters, with equipment rentals conveniently nearby.
The Leitner ski lift whisks you up to Mount Zuruldi, reaching 2,347 meters above sea level in just 10 minutes. The resort also features two smaller ski lifts, measuring 600 and 800 meters in length, catering to various skill levels.
Hatsvali boasts three pistes: a red run (1,900 meters), a blue run (2,600 meters), and a beginner-friendly slope (300 meters). For those seeking an adrenaline rush, opportunities for freeriding, backcountry skiing, and ski touring await.
The second Svanetian resort, Tetnuldi, has been welcoming skiers since December 2015. Named after the legendary mountain, Tetnuldi is steeped in local folklore. According to the Svans, the majestic peaks of Ushba and Tetnuldi were once a couple destined to be together, transformed into mountains to gaze at one another for eternity. When one of them is sorrowful, both peaks are shrouded in fog. We hope that during your visit, both mountains are in high spirits, offering you clear skies and breathtaking views while you ski.
Located 15 kilometers from Mestia, Tetnuldi is nearly as expansive as Gudauri, featuring three new POMA lifts that transport guests to altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 3,165 meters. With several developed pistes, the longest run stretches an impressive 9.5 kilometers. Tetnuldi also provides exceptional opportunities for freeriding, all while showcasing stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
While après-ski activities and accommodations are based in Mestia, a short drive to the resort is necessary. However, the affordability of equipment rentals and ski passes—such as the full-day ski pass in Hatsvali, which cost around $10 during the 2014-2015 season—helps to mitigate this minor inconvenience.
After a day on the slopes, take the time to delve into the region’s rich traditions. Savor the local specialty, kubdari, a delicious meat pie, at the highest restaurant in Georgia, located on Mount Zuruldi. Don’t miss the chance to visit the National Museum of History of Svaneti and the house-museum of Mikheil Khergiani, a renowned Svanetian mountaineer. These experiences will deepen your understanding of the unique culture and mentality of this remarkable region, making it an unforgettable winter holiday destination.
If your visit coincides with February, specifically ten weeks before Orthodox Easter, you may witness the half-pagan, half-Christian Svanetian feast known as Lamproba. This celebration honors the souls of ancestors and features torchlight processions, bonfires, prayers, and a festive meal shared among the community.
Choosing Svaneti as your winter vacation destination is always a wise decision. The blend of ancient traditions and excellent skiing opportunities creates a delightful atmosphere for an unforgettable holiday.
