If you have just one day to explore the capital of Kazakhstan from sunrise to sunset, there’s a good chance you can cover the city’s top attractions, as they are mostly concentrated in the city center.
Your journey can begin with a visit to the Bayterek Monument, which serves as a symbol of the city and a key landmark. Opened in 2003, this tower represents the “Tree of Life” and consists of three levels. It’s one of the most photographed sites in Astana, frequently seen on postcards and souvenirs. The tower also offers a panoramic viewing platform with stunning views of the city.
Close by, on the Water-Green Boulevard, you’ll find several highlights: the Lovers Park, the Singing Fountains Alley, the State Archive building (resembling an egg in its design), and the “dancing” residential complexes that catch the eye with their unique architecture.
Another remarkable site is the Nur-Astana Mosque, which opened its doors to worshippers and visitors alike in 2005. This mosque is a stunning example of modern Eastern architecture and leaves a lasting impression. Until 2012, it was the largest mosque in Kazakhstan, before the grand Hazret Sultan Mosque was built. Located on the right bank of the Ishim River, this enormous religious structure can accommodate up to 10,000 people. Its evening lighting creates a magical atmosphere, making it even more awe-inspiring.
While you’re still on the right bank, a visit to the National Museum of Kazakhstan is a must. This expansive museum is divided into 10 thematic halls, offering an in-depth journey through the history of Kazakhstan, from ancient times to the present.
Another architectural marvel often referred to as a “wonder of the world” is the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, designed in the shape of a pyramid. Though its main function is to host gatherings and conferences for religious leaders, its striking exterior makes it a must-see.
The city’s top attractions are mostly located within a compact rectangular area, making it easy to explore on foot. It’s worth noting that Astana is still undergoing significant development, so visitors can look forward to discovering even more exciting landmarks and experiences in the future.
