Constitution Day in Kazakhstan

Constitution Day in Kazakhstan is an important national holiday, observed every year on August 30th. This date commemorates a pivotal moment in the country’s history when, in 1995, the people of Kazakhstan overwhelmingly approved a new constitution through a national referendum, marking a decisive step in the establishment of Kazakhstan as an independent state.

Although Kazakhstan officially gained its independence in 1991, it was only four years later that the nation ratified its Basic Law. Constitution Day symbolizes the country’s commitment to building a democratic, secular, constitutional, and social state, as stated in Article 1 of the Constitution of Kazakhstan.

Since its adoption, the Constitution has undergone amendments twice, first in 1998 and again in 2007, with the latter revision introducing a presidential-parliamentary system of governance.

On Constitution Day, celebrations take place across the entire country, with events such as concerts, exhibitions, and festivals held in cities and regions nationwide. While rural and mountainous areas host local parades and sporting events, most official festivities are centered in the capital, Nur-Sultan. Here, the day is marked by performances from both Kazakh and international artists, solemn gatherings in parks, and a spectacular fireworks display in the evening, making it one of the most festive days on the national calendar.
