The Mausoleum of Mirali Bab

Mirali Bab Mausoleum, Sayram

The Mausoleum of Mirali Bab lies in the heart of the village of Sayram, in Sayram District, Turkestan Region, nestled within an ancient cemetery just 250 meters from the intersection of two main streets. Though small, it is among the most picturesque mausoleums in Sayram.

According to legend, this mausoleum stands on the site of an earlier mazar—a holy tomb constructed in the 15th–16th centuries to honor a revered figure who lived in the 11th–12th centuries. Research by M.E. Mason in 1925 indicates that the original dome had long since collapsed and that “the last remnants of the structure were entirely destroyed.” The current building, which dates back to the late 19th century, is constructed from standard burnt bricks measuring 120 x 250 x 60 mm. The mausoleum has undergone numerous repairs and alterations over time, though it remains unplastered. It is a single-chambered portal-domed structure, with a layout measuring 7.6 by 6.1 meters. The main cubic chamber is capped by a dome on a tall drum, giving it an elevated and dignified presence.

The dome is coated in a cement layer, and the main façade is distinguished by a portal with a high arched niche. The entrance lies deep within this niche, flanked by corner pilasters that are crowned with pointed turrets. Decorative brickwork adorns the dome’s bands and cornices, enhancing the façade with elegant patterns. Inside, the mausoleum features a square chamber with arched walls. A brick belt set at an angle along the façade separates the drum from the dome, while the walls and floors are covered in a cement-sand mix. In its current form, the dome is clad in metal sheeting.

Historical records mention that, to the north of Mirali Bab’s mausoleum, there once stood a modest mazar of his father, Malek Shah, built from light bricks. Mirali Bab was a notable scholar who contributed greatly to the widespread practice of Islam in the region. His father, Hazret Malek, a ruler of the 11th–12th centuries, maintained a friendship with Khoja Yusuf Hamadani. The two corresponded frequently, exchanging books and reflections on their readings. The title “Bab,” derived from Persian meaning “gateway,” later appended to their names, reflects the profound contributions both made in the pursuit of truth and justice.

Mirali Bab had two sons—Khoja Nasrullah Farso and Khoja Fathullah Mahmud—who were later revered by the people as wise men. They were laid to rest near their father’s tomb, bearing testament to their family’s legacy. Today, both an ancient cemetery dating back to the 13th century and one of Sayram’s residential districts bear the name of Mirali Bab, preserving his memory in the heart of the village.
