The Okota Bab Mausoleum

The Okota Bab Mausoleum in Sayram is closely tied to the early life of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi, who was born in this historic village. Determining Yasawi’s exact birth date from historical records is challenging; however, hagiographic sources from the later 13th century place his life prior to the Mongol invasion, approximately between 1103 and 1166. This chronology is widely accepted in contemporary Central Eurasian studies. His first teacher, Hazrat Sheikh Shahobiddin Isfijabi, is now fondly remembered as Okota Baba, or the “White Grandfather.”

Next to his mausoleum flows a small stream that links the main road with Sayram, creating a serene backdrop and adding to the mystique of the mausoleum. This bridge and stream are central to a local legend recounting a meeting in Ahmad Yasawi’s childhood with the great wanderer Arslan Bab, also known as Arystan Bab. This encounter is celebrated as a significant moment in Yasawi’s early spiritual journey.

Situated in the northern part of the village, the Okota Bab Mausoleum serves as both a historic and spiritual landmark, drawing visitors who seek to connect with the roots of Yasawi’s spiritual heritage in Central Asia.
