Friday Mosque of Khujand

The Friday Mosque in Khujand is not only the largest mosque in the city but also the biggest in the entire Sughd region. Its beauty is evident both inside and out, offering a serene and inviting atmosphere. Even during the hot summer months, the interior remains cool and refreshing. The mosque is known for its incredible acoustics—conversations spoken in hushed tones can be heard clearly across the hall.

Visitors, including tourists, are welcome to enter, take in the architecture, and capture photos. Female visitors, however, should remember to wear a headscarf before entering. Inside, the mosque is impeccably clean and neatly arranged, with carpets lining the floor throughout. Every Friday, a large crowd gathers for prayer, often filling the mosque to capacity, with some worshippers resorting to praying in the courtyard outside due to space limitations.

What makes Khujand’s Friday Mosque truly unique is that it is composed of two distinct sections: the central modern white building with a striking blue dome and two older wings painted in yellow. These two sections stand in sharp contrast to one another—while the modern area is bright, white, and spacious, the older wings are made of wood, with a more colorful, intricate design. Pay close attention to the beautifully carved wooden columns, doors, and ceilings in these wings, which display remarkable craftsmanship.

Located in the heart of the city, directly opposite the Panjshanbe Market, the mosque is part of the larger complex that includes the Mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin. It is an essential stop for anyone visiting Khujand, offering both spiritual reflection and an appreciation of historical architecture.
