Panjshanbe Market, Khujand

The Panjshanbe Covered Market is one of the most vibrant and colorful attractions in Khujand. Its name, like the capital Dushanbe, is derived from a day of the week: Dushanbe means «Monday,» while Panjshanbe translates to «Thursday.» Historically, trade took place in Dushanbe on Mondays and in Khujand on Thursdays, which explains the market’s name.

Situated in the heart of Khujand, Panjshanbe Market is directly opposite the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum. It consists of a central pavilion surrounded by numerous stalls, tents, and shops. The market is always bustling, drawing not just locals, but also visitors from nearby villages who come to shop and experience its lively atmosphere.

What sets Panjshanbe Market apart is its distinctive architecture and unique design. The construction of the main pavilion began in the mid-20th century and was completed in 1964. The building is an eclectic blend of architectural styles, merging classicism with the Stalinist Empire style. Its interior also features a mix of Soviet and oriental influences. The central entrance is crowned by a semi-spherical portal, adorned with vivid paintings and flanked by sculptures of a man and a woman. Inside, visitors are greeted by a long, arched hall lined with columns, adding to its grandeur.

This lavish architectural display is fitting for Khujand, as Panjshanbe Market served as the gateway to the bountiful Fergana Valley, Central Asia’s main oasis. In Soviet times, it was a key destination for buyers from surrounding regions, including Tashkent.

Panjshanbe Market is divided into two sections: one for groceries and another for non-food items. On the ground floor, a vast hall is filled with an array of fruits, vegetables, bread, and spices, capturing the true essence of a traditional Central Asian bazaar. The upper level houses a variety of shops offering clothing, electronics, and household goods, typical of the post-Soviet shopping arcade style.

A visit to Khujand wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through Panjshanbe Market. It provides an authentic experience of this ancient city’s rich culture. Conveniently located across from the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum, the market is a must-see attraction for anyone exploring Khujand.

From East Street, where minibuses connect to all parts of the city, you’ll find the striking «Shark» («East») hotel, another notable Soviet-era building built in 1954 that stands adjacent to Panjshanbe Market, adding to the area’s colorful architectural landscape.
