Route in brief:

Tbilisi – David Gareja Monastery Complex – Tbilisi

Step into the mystical world of ancient Georgia with our one-day David Gareja Tour—a captivating journey to one of the country’s most remarkable and sacred sites. Located in the stunning semi-desert landscapes along the Georgian-Azerbaijani border, the David Gareja Monastery Complex is carved into the cliffs of a rugged mountain range. Founded in the 6th century by St. David, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers, this site is a true treasure trove of spiritual heritage, history, and art. Explore centuries-old cave dwellings, wander through ancient chapels, and admire vibrant medieval frescoes that have miraculously withstood time. This tour is not only a spiritual retreat but also a scenic adventure through Georgia’s most unique natural terrain. Ideal for history lovers, culture seekers, and photographers alike—this day trip promises to be as enlightening as it is visually breathtaking.

At 09:00, our experienced guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in Tbilisi to begin your unforgettable journey to the remote and awe-inspiring David Gareja Monastery Complex. The drive leads southeast through arid, otherworldly semi-desert terrain, offering dramatic views of hills and plateaus unique to this region of Georgia.

Before entering the reserve area, we’ll make a short stop at a local supermarket, where you can grab snacks and water to fuel your hike. Upon arrival at David Gareja, you’ll begin your exploration at the Lavra Monastery, the heart of the complex. This sacred site, founded in the 6th century by St. David, features monk cells, a central courtyard, and a functioning church—all carved directly into the sandstone rock face.

Continue your hike (approx. 1.5–2 hours round trip) up to Udabno Monastery, set high on the cliffside with breathtaking views of the Azerbaijani lowlands. The path is moderately challenging but rewarding, and along the way, you’ll discover stunning 12th-century frescoes that depict scenes such as the “Last Supper” and the “Exaltation of the Cross.” Some of these images are incredibly well-preserved, offering an extraordinary window into Georgia’s medieval Christian art.

After enjoying a short rest and soaking in the panoramic landscape, descend along a different trail, taking in more views of the stark beauty of the desert region. Then, return to your vehicle and head back to Tbilisi, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Tour Duration: 7–8 hours

My one-day trip to David Gareja Monastery was truly unforgettable. The surreal beauty of the semi-desert landscape combined with the ancient spirituality of the cave monasteries made for an experience I will always treasure. Hiking to the Lavra Monastery and then further up to Udabno was both peaceful and inspiring. The 12th-century frescoes were breathtaking—it’s hard to believe such delicate artwork still exists in such a remote area. I want to sincerely thank our guide, Giorgi, whose deep knowledge and genuine love for Georgian culture brought every story and stone to life. His passion for history, combined with his warm hospitality, made this tour much more than a sightseeing trip—it was a cultural journey. I feel so fortunate to have taken this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper connection to Georgia’s rich spiritual and historical roots. Thank you, Giorgi!
