Tbilisi, Zugdidi, Mestia, Ushguli

Embark on a journey to one of Georgia’s most awe-inspiring regions with our 3-day Svaneti Tour—a perfect blend of majestic Caucasus mountains, centuries-old traditions, and architectural wonders untouched by time. Often called the “land of a thousand towers,” Svaneti is a region where ancient stone watchtowers stand tall against dramatic alpine landscapes, narrating tales of bravery and resilience.

Your adventure begins with a scenic train ride from Tbilisi to Zugdidi, offering glimpses of Georgia’s diverse beauty before the true magic unfolds. The road from Zugdidi to Mestia winds through the breathtaking Inguri Pass, where every turn reveals panoramic views of emerald valleys, snow-capped peaks, and charming mountain hamlets.

In Mestia, you’ll step into a world where history lives on in the stone walls of medieval Svan towers and traditional “machubi” houses. The cultural heartbeat of the Svans—an ancient ethnic group—beats strong here, and you’ll feel it with every story and tradition shared.

A highlight of the tour is the visit to Ushguli, Europe’s highest permanently inhabited village at 2,200 meters above sea level. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ushguli enchants with its preserved medieval architecture, ancient Lamaria Church with 12th-century frescoes, and jaw-dropping views of Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s tallest peak.

Before returning to Tbilisi, you’ll explore the rich heritage of the Svaneti Ethnographic Museum and have the option to visit the charming ethno-village “Sisa Tura”, where authentic Megrelian dishes and living traditions await, or the elegant Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi.

This tour promises an unforgettable immersion into Georgia’s cultural treasures and natural wonders—an experience you’ll cherish long after your return. Join us and uncover the mystical allure of Svaneti!

Itinerary

Day 1Tbilisi – Zugdidi – Mestia

Your Svaneti adventure begins bright and early as our professional driver and knowledgeable guide meet you at your hotel in Tbilisi at 07:30 a.m. After a warm welcome, you will be comfortably transferred to the Central Railway Station. Here, you’ll board a scenic train journey to Zugdidi, departing at 08:25. This ride offers a leisurely introduction to the diverse landscapes of Georgia, from rolling hills to lush valleys. After approximately six hours, you will arrive in Zugdidi at 14:11.

Awaiting your arrival is a local driver, ready to whisk you away on an exciting road trip towards Mestia, the heart of Svaneti (approx. 130 km). As you ascend through the winding Inguri Pass, be prepared for a visual feast of towering mountains, deep gorges, and serene rivers, making the journey itself a memorable experience.

Mestia, an ancient highland town, awaits with its charming blend of untouched nature and centuries-old traditions. This region is the birthplace of the Svans—an ethnic group with a distinct language, rich folklore, and unique customs preserved through generations. Famous for its medieval defensive towers, Svaneti is often referred to as the “land of a thousand towers,” symbolizing the region’s historical resilience.

In the evening, you’ll delve deeper into Svaneti’s architectural legacy with visits to an authentic Svan house known as “machubi”, and one of the iconic “koshki” stone towers. This immersive experience offers a glimpse into the daily life of Svan families through the centuries. Overnight stay in Mestia.

Day 2Mestia – Ushguli – Mestia

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, the adventure continues with a drive to Ushguli, an awe-inspiring village perched at an elevation of 2,200 meters, making it the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe. Ushguli’s remoteness and altitude have helped preserve its unique medieval character, earning it a well-deserved spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself stepping back in time as you wander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with ancient Svan towers and stone houses. The village, home to around 70 families, is a living museum of Svaneti’s proud past. A highlight of your visit is the Lamaria Church, a 12th-century gem adorned with stunning frescoes and shrouded in legends—locals believe Queen Tamar herself may be buried beneath its sacred grounds.

Take time to soak in the mesmerizing views of Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak, whose snow-clad slopes dominate the skyline. After a day filled with cultural discoveries and breathtaking landscapes, you will return to Mestia for a restful overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3:Mestia – Zugdidi – Tbilisi

On your final day in Svaneti, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before checking out. At 10:00 a.m., the day’s program begins with a visit to the Svaneti Ethnographic Museum, a treasure trove of history showcasing a remarkable collection of ancient Orthodox icons, ceremonial artifacts, and unique exhibits that reflect the region’s proud heritage.

Following the museum visit, you’ll depart Mestia and head back to Zugdidi. Before boarding the evening train, you have two optional enriching experiences to choose from:

  1. Ethno-village “Sisa Tura” in Chkhoria – A fascinating living museum where you can explore an authentic Megrelian “Oda” house, filled with well-preserved relics, traditional clothing, and household items from centuries past. The visit culminates in a delicious Megrelian lunch featuring local delicacies like Gebzhalia (cheese with mint sauce), Ghomi (cornmeal porridge), and Sulguni cheese.

  2. Dadiani Palace Complex – Alternatively, history enthusiasts may opt to visit this 17th-century royal residence, once home to the noble Dadiani family. The palace complex includes stately buildings, a beautiful church, and a lush botanical garden, offering insights into the aristocratic life of Georgia’s past.

In the evening, you’ll board the 17:25 train to Tbilisi, arriving in the capital at 23:18. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel, bringing your unforgettable Svaneti journey to a close.

Please note: The optional visit to “Sisa Tura” requires prior reservation.

My 3-day Svaneti tour was an unforgettable adventure! From the moment I was picked up in Tbilisi, everything was perfectly organized. The train ride to Zugdidi was comfortable, but the real magic began on the scenic drive to Mestia—breathtaking mountain views at every turn. Visiting the ancient Svan towers and walking through the timeless village of Ushguli felt like stepping into a living history book. The highlight was definitely the Lamaria Church with its stunning frescoes and the serene view of Mount Shkhara.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful Georgian guide, Nino, whose deep passion for her country made the entire experience so special. Her knowledge of Svaneti’s culture, history, and traditions brought each place to life. She shared personal stories that made us feel truly connected to Georgia. I highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking authentic beauty and genuine cultural experiences!
