Route in brief:

Yerevan – Arutch – Marmashen – Gyumri – Harichavank – Yerevan

Step off the beaten path and experience a captivating journey into Armenia’s historic Shirak region on this one-day tour from Yerevan to Arutch, Marmashen, Gyumri, and Harichavank. From the windswept ruins of Arutch Cathedral—once the seat of power for the Mamikonian dynasty—to the 10th-century Marmashen Monastery nestled above the Akhuryan River, this tour unveils hidden corners of Armenia’s spiritual and architectural heritage. In Gyumri, the country’s cultural capital, stroll through the preserved 19th-century Kumayri district and visit the Dzitoghtsyan Museum of National Architecture for a deeper understanding of Armenian urban life. The tour also includes a visit to the hilltop Harichavank Monastery, a tranquil complex with stunning views and centuries of history carved in stone. This tour blends medieval grandeur, local flavor, and northern charm into one enriching experience. Perfect for culture lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and curious travelers eager to discover Armenia’s lesser-known treasures.

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Yerevan, your guide and driver will pick you up for a full-day journey through Armenia’s captivating northwestern region. The tour begins with a scenic drive toward the historical site of Arutch. Once a royal capital during the rule of Grigor Mamikonian in the 7th century, Arutch is home to a monumental cathedral that reflects early medieval Armenian architecture in its purest form. Its massive stone walls and towering structure give a sense of both spiritual and military might, echoing the importance the site once held.

From Arutch, continue to the peaceful village of Marmashen, perched above the Akhuryan River. Here, you’ll explore the Marmashen Monastery complex, a beautiful example of 10th–13th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Built by the nobleman Vahram Pahlavouni, this red-tuff monastery complex is known for its harmonious proportions and timeless grace. Surrounded by nature and silence, Marmashen offers a tranquil space to reflect and admire the unique craftsmanship of medieval Armenian builders.

Next, head to Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city and cultural capital. With its charming blend of old-world ambiance and vibrant street life, Gyumri is a treasure trove of 19th-century architecture. Begin your exploration with a visit to the Sev Ghul fortress and then wander through the historic Kumayri district, where cobbled streets and balconied houses preserve the essence of a bygone era. You’ll also stop by the Dzitoghtsyan Museum of National Architecture, which offers an intimate glimpse into daily life in 19th-century Armenia through artifacts, clothing, and photographs.

In the afternoon, travel to the hillside monastery of Harichavank. Dating from the 13th century, this complex once served as a religious center and royal summer residence. With its serene setting and impressive stone carvings, Harichavank beautifully rounds off the day’s immersion into Armenia’s spiritual and architectural heritage.

After the visit, return to Yerevan through the Armenian highlands, bringing with you a deeper appreciation for the country’s history, culture, and regional diversity.

My day trip to Marmashen, Gyumri, and Harichavank was a journey through time. Each stop had its own unique atmosphere—from the silent dignity of Arutch Cathedral to the red-brick charm of Marmashen Monastery, and the lively, historic streets of Gyumri.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to our guide, Arman, whose knowledge and love for his country made this tour incredibly enriching. His stories brought each site to life, and his warmth and attentiveness made everyone feel welcome and cared for. I left with a deeper appreciation for Armenia’s heritage and a strong desire to return.
