Route in brief:

Yerevan – Lake Sevan – Sevanavank – Dilijan – Goshavank – Haghartsin – Yerevan

Discover the stunning natural beauty and spiritual heritage of Armenia on this unforgettable one-day journey to the country’s northeast. This tour takes you from Yerevan to the shimmering blue waters of Lake Sevan—one of the world’s highest freshwater lakes—then to the hilltop Sevanavank Monastery, where black-stone chapels stand in silence above the vast “Geghama Sea.” Continue to the forested spa town of Dilijan, known as the “Armenian Switzerland,” where two of the country’s finest medieval monasteries await: Goshavank, once home to a major center of learning and masterfully carved khachkars, and Haghartsin, a forest-cloaked sanctuary echoing with centuries of monastic tradition. This tour offers a perfect balance of breathtaking landscapes, ancient architecture, and deep-rooted cultural insight—all in a single day. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or a seeker of hidden beauty, this tour will leave you inspired and enriched.

Your full-day adventure into Armenia’s serene northeast begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Yerevan. The journey sets off toward the country’s mountainous gem—Lake Sevan, often referred to as the “Geghama Sea.” Situated over 1,900 meters above sea level, this vast high-altitude lake is one of the largest freshwater alpine lakes in the world. Here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the cobalt-blue waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks and gentle green slopes.

Your first major stop is Sevanavank Monastery, perched on a peninsula that was once an island. The complex, originally founded in the 9th century, includes two black tuff stone churches—Surb Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surb Karapet (Holy Precursor)—which rise above a sea of weathered khachkars (cross-stones). Their somber color and stark silhouettes give Sevanavank its nickname, “The Black Monastery.” The panoramic view from the monastery over the lake is breathtaking and timeless.

Continue northward into the lush, forested region of Dilijan, a resort town known for its cool climate, mineral springs, and artistic charm. Nestled within the Dilijan National Park, the area offers a dramatic contrast to the rocky landscapes of Sevan.

In Dilijan, you’ll visit Goshavank Monastery, named after the 12th-century scholar and lawmaker Mkhitar Gosh. Once a major center of medieval Armenian learning, Goshavank boasted a renowned university and manuscript library. The site is famous for its masterfully carved khachkars, especially one considered a pinnacle of Armenian stone artistry. These intricate carvings tell stories of devotion, resilience, and craftsmanship.

Next, delve deeper into the forest to reach Haghartsin Monastery, a peaceful retreat that took shape between the 10th and 13th centuries. Hidden in a wooded gorge, the ensemble includes several churches and chapels built over the centuries. The name “Haghartsin” is linked to eagles, which were said to soar and play in the skies above—“hagh” meaning game, and “artsin” derived from “artsiv,” eagle in Armenian. The secluded setting, surrounded by thick forest and mountain silence, offers a moment of true spiritual reflection.

After absorbing the beauty, history, and serenity of the day, you will return to Yerevan by evening. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel, marking the end of a tour that weaves together nature, sacred heritage, and the soul of Armenia—all within a single, enriching day.

Taking the one-day tour to Lake Sevan, Sevanavank, Dilijan, Goshavank, and Haghartsin was one of the highlights of my visit to Armenia. The journey felt like stepping into a living history book surrounded by majestic nature. The serene beauty of Lake Sevan took my breath away, and Sevanavank’s black stone churches had a mystical charm. Dilijan’s forests were lush and peaceful, and the monasteries of Goshavank and Haghartsin were architectural gems that transported me to the Middle Ages. I’m especially grateful to our guide, Arman, whose knowledge and genuine passion for Armenian culture enriched every stop. He shared stories, legends, and historical context with such warmth that I felt deeply connected to the places we visited. His pride in his homeland was truly inspiring. I left the tour with a deep appreciation for Armenia’s spiritual heritage and natural splendor. Highly recommended for anyone visiting this beautiful country.
