Driving distance: approx. 260 km | Duration: 10–12 hours | Hike duration: 1.5 hours (moderate difficulty)
Your adventure begins at 9:00 AM in Tbilisi, from where we embark on a scenic drive westward through dramatic mountain landscapes toward the Tsalka region. Our first major stop is the awe-inspiring Tsalka Canyon, located around 100 kilometers from the capital. This natural wonder stretches seven kilometers in length and reaches a depth of 300 meters. Towering above the gorge is the spectacular Diamond Bridge—a 180-meter-high glass suspension bridge opened in 2022, quickly gaining popularity among thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. The bridge offers a 360-degree viewing platform in the shape of a diamond, granting unparalleled panoramic views of the canyon and its surroundings.
After taking in the views and snapping unforgettable photos, we descend on foot via a paved trail to reach the mesmerizing Dashbashi Waterfall, known as the “Weeping Wall” for its unique cascade effect. This moderately challenging hike, about 1.5 kilometers round-trip, typically takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete and is rewarded with breathtaking scenery and tranquility.
Following the hike, we continue driving through Georgia’s rugged volcanic highlands, passing by the serene waters of Lake Tsalka and the impressive Paravani Lake—the highest freshwater lake in Georgia. The stark yet beautiful Samtskhe plains, known for their harsh winters and gusty winds, open up before us as we head further into the region.
Next, we stop at the charming Poka village to visit the Poka Nunnery, where legend says Saint Nino once rested during her journey to spread Christianity in Georgia. The nunnery is still active today and renowned for producing artisanal goods including handmade candles, organic honey, jams, freshly baked bread, local cheeses, and even handmade chocolates. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a peaceful moment and pick up unique gifts crafted with love and devotion.
Our day concludes as we arrive at the legendary Vardzia cave monastery for an overnight stay in the area. Rest well for tomorrow’s cultural discoveries.
Driving distance: approx. 210 km | Duration: 8–10 hours | Meals: Breakfast included
After breakfast and hotel checkout, we begin our day with a deep dive into Georgia’s medieval past by exploring the incredible cave city of Vardzia. Commissioned in the 12th century by King George III and completed under the reign of his daughter, the iconic Queen Tamar, Vardzia was constructed as a spiritual stronghold and a defense post on Georgia’s southern frontier. Far more than a simple collection of caves, the site is an architectural marvel—a multilevel city carved into the mountain that includes chapels, monasteries, storage rooms, tunnels, stairs, living quarters, and even a library and bathhouse, all interconnected by narrow passages.
From Vardzia, we journey to Akhaltsikhe to visit one of Georgia’s most remarkable fortified complexes—Rabati Fortress. Located on a hill overlooking the Potskhovi River, the name “Rabati” originates from the Arabic word for “fortified place.” Built in the 13th century, the fortress has experienced numerous invasions and reconstructions, reflecting a rich blend of cultures and faiths through its architecture and layout.
Undergoing significant restoration in 2012, Rabati has since transformed into a vibrant cultural and historical center—virtually a city within a fortress. Inside its walls, you’ll find a mosque, a church, a synagogue, a historical museum, a small garden, a variety of artisan shops, a hotel, and even a registry office that hosts local weddings.
After a guided tour through this multicultural landmark, we conclude our journey with a comfortable drive back to Tbilisi. Upon arrival, drop-off at your hotel marks the end of an enriching two-day exploration of the natural and historical gems of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.
