Departure from Tbilisi at 08:00. Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel to begin your two-day adventure. The journey first takes you to the spectacular Zhinvali Reservoir, a stunning turquoise lake nestled among the green hills of central Georgia. The drive is initially along a well-paved road, but as you venture deeper into the mountains, the road becomes narrow and winding, leading up to the Datvisjvari Pass at an impressive elevation of 2,676 meters. This high-altitude pass offers one of the most awe-inspiring panoramic views in the Caucasus. From here, you’ll see dramatic mountain peaks draped in lush alpine vegetation and the winding Arghuni River sparkling in the distance. Watch for grazing sheep and traditional shepherd huts dotting the landscape.
From the pass, descend into Khevsureti, a region rich in warrior tradition and ancient customs, known for its defensive architecture and strong community spirit. By afternoon, you’ll reach the mystical mountain village of Shatili, a remarkable fortress-village that rises dramatically from the river valley. Constructed entirely from stone, Shatili looks like a medieval fortress straight out of a fairytale. Its interconnected towers and terraces once served both as homes and fortifications for the highland clans. Though now sparsely inhabited – with only a couple dozen families living here during the warmer months – the village retains its traditional charm and ancient spirit.
Upon arrival, check in to a local guesthouse, where you’ll be served a hearty Georgian lunch made from local ingredients. The guesthouses here are modest but hospitable, offering shared bathrooms and communal dining spaces.
In the afternoon, take a gentle walking tour of Shatili. Explore the maze-like complex of interconnected defensive towers, climb up the narrow stone staircases, and walk along corridors that once buzzed with life and guarded against invasion. Step into ancient chambers and absorb the atmosphere of a place that has stood for centuries.
Dinner is served back at the guesthouse, where you’ll enjoy authentic Georgian dishes. Spend the evening soaking in the fresh mountain air and reflecting on the region’s rich past.

After a restful night, begin your day with a warm cup of coffee and a traditional Georgian breakfast. Then, depart for the Anatori Necropolis, located a short distance from Shatili. This site is both eerie and inspiring – a solemn reminder of the resilience and unity of the people of Khevsureti. In the 18th century, when a plague (likely the Black Death) struck the nearby village, its inhabitants made the ultimate sacrifice. To prevent the spread of the disease, the infected voluntarily isolated themselves in specially built stone crypts, awaiting death in solidarity and silence. Today, these tombs still contain human remains, preserving the memory of their selfless act.
You can choose to reach Anatori by vehicle or on foot. The hike is a pleasant and scenic walk of about 2.5 kilometers, with a slight elevation gain and descent, and takes roughly 40 minutes to an hour. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, peaceful woodlands, and the blue Arghuni River tracing its path alongside the road.
After exploring the necropolis, continue to the legendary fortress of Mutso. This hilltop settlement, once an impenetrable stronghold, dominates the surrounding valley from a high rocky outcrop. Like with Anatori, you have the option to drive to the base of the Mutso Hill or hike the 8.7-kilometer route, which includes a steady ascent and descent through untouched nature and past abandoned highland hamlets. This scenic trek, which lasts approximately three hours, is an excellent way to witness remnants of traditional architecture and absorb the unspoiled wilderness of Khevsureti.
From the base of the hill, everyone must hike the final 341 meters to the fortress on foot. This last stretch, though short, is steep and requires good footwear. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the entire valley and the Arghuni River below. Explore the recently restored fortress walls, towers, and storerooms, and learn about the strategic importance of Mutso in medieval Georgia. This remote bastion once served as a safe haven and defense post for local warriors and villagers.
After descending from Mutso, drive back to Shatili for a relaxing lunch at your guesthouse. Then begin the return trip to Tbilisi, covering a distance of approximately 150 kilometers. The drive back will take about 3.5 hours, offering a final chance to admire the dramatic mountain landscapes.
