While the valley might seem remote at first glance, it is actually highly accessible from the capital, Tashkent, as well as from neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Domestic Flights to the Fergana Valley

Take a short one-hour domestic flight from Tashkent Airport to the airports of Fergana (FEG), Namangan (NMA), or Kokand with Uzbek Airways or Silk Avia Airlines. (Note: Silk Avia does not accept international credit cards, so it’s best to have a local travel agency book your ticket for you.) The Andijan airport is expected to reopen in 2025.

Trains to the Fergana Valley

Uzbekistan’s railway network operates several daily trains from Tashkent to Andijan, making stops in Margilan (serving Fergana city), Kokand, Namangan, and Pop in the Fergana Valley. The journey typically takes between four to six hours, depending on your final destination, and passes through the scenic Kamchik Mountains. Note: Some trains to the Fergana Valley depart from Tashkent’s Northern Railway Station, while others leave from the Southern Station, so be sure to check your ticket carefully.

Additionally, a night train runs from Khiva to Andijan (approximately 20 hours), passing through Bukhara and stopping at Kokand and Margilan stations.

All trains offer first- and second-class seating, with a variety of train types serving the Fergana Valley. The fastest option is the modern Uzbekistan Train, a high-speed service running twice daily between Tashkent and Andijan with stops in the valley. The Night Train is a slower alternative with sleeper compartments for added comfort.

Tickets can be purchased online through the Uzbekistan Railways website or mobile app. Alternatively, you can buy them directly at the station or have a local travel agency arrange them for you. Tickets typically go on sale two months in advance but tend to sell out quickly, so it’s advisable to book early.

Shared Taxis from Tashkent to the Fergana Valley

Shared taxis operate regularly between Tashkent and the major cities of Fergana, Namangan, and Andijan in the Fergana Valley. The journey typically takes between four to six hours, depending on your destination and weather conditions, particularly if there is snow in the Kamchik mountains.

Fares vary depending on the season, time of day, and other factors but generally range from 150,000 to 200,000 UZS per person in a standard shared taxi. If you are traveling with a large amount of luggage or require extra space, you may need to pay an additional fee.

For those who prefer a private ride or do not want to wait for other passengers, a private taxi from Tashkent to any city in the Fergana Valley will cost the equivalent of four passenger fares, typically 600,000 to 800,000 UZS.

The main departure point for shared taxis is the Kuilyuk district parking area in Tashkent.

International Flights to the Fergana Valley

Reaching the Fergana Valley directly from international destinations is becoming increasingly convenient. You can fly nonstop to Fergana International Airport from Istanbul, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk with Uzbekistan Airways, Turkish Airlines, Qanot Sharq Airlines, and Ural Airlines.

For those traveling to Namangan Airport, direct flights are available from Kuwait, Istanbul, Jeddah, and various Russian cities, operated by Uzbekistan Airways, Qanot Sharq Airlines, Jazeera Airways, and Ural Airlines.


Overland Travel from Kyrgyzstan

There are two international border crossings between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan that allow entry into the Fergana Valley.

  1. Dostyk Border Crossing (Osh – Andijan)

    • The largest and busiest border crossing is Dostyk, connecting Osh (Kyrgyzstan) with Andijan (Uzbekistan).
    • The Dostyk checkpoint is located near Osh, and after crossing into Uzbekistan, it takes about one hour to reach Andijan and two hours to reach Fergana.
    • The easiest way for foreign travelers to cross is on foot, then arrange transportation on the Uzbek side.
    • We recommend contacting one of tour operators or guides in advance to organize transport.
    • Alternatively, you can find shared taxis at the border to Andijan or other Fergana Valley cities.
  2. Kensey – Uch-Kurgan Border Crossing (Jalal-Abad – Namangan)

    • This crossing connects Namangan Region (Uzbekistan) with Jalal-Abad Region (Kyrgyzstan).
    • Just an hour’s drive from the border lies Arslanbob, a popular Kyrgyzstan destination for hiking and overnight stays.
    • The drive from the border to Namangan takes about an hour.
    • We strongly recommend pre-booking transport to take you from the Uzbek border to Namangan or any other destination.

Overland Travel from Tajikistan

The Konibodom – Besharik Border Crossing connects Khujand (Tajikistan) with Kokand (Uzbekistan). The drive from the border to Kokand takes about one hour.

As with other border crossings, we advise arranging transport in advance with one tour operators or guides to ensure a smooth transfer from the border.

For the most flexibility in planning your itinerary and travel time within the Fergana Valley, we recommend hiring a private driver. With private transport, you can explore artisan workshops, scenic natural areas, and off-the-beaten-path destinations that are not accessible by public transport or shared taxis.

Shared Taxis in the Fergana Valley

Shared taxis (marshrutkas) are a budget-friendly way to travel between major cities and towns in the valley. However, they can take longer, as they only depart once full and often make multiple stops along the way.

Each city or town has a designated area or bus station where shared taxis wait for passengers traveling in specific directions. If you’re unsure where to find one, ask your hotel for the best location to catch a shared taxi to your destination.

For a more comfortable journey, government-operated buses run between Fergana, Namangan, and Andijan. These buses are equipped with air conditioning and cushioned seats and typically depart from the main railway stations.

Train Travel Between Cities in the Fergana Valley

The Fergana Valley is also connected by rail, making train travel a convenient option. For example:

  • Andijan to Kokand – The O‘zbekiston 731 train takes 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Andijan to Margilan – Just 45 minutes by train.
