Fergana, located in the southern part of the Fergana Valley, is one of Uzbekistan’s youngest yet rapidly developing cities. Established in 1876 following the annexation of the Kokand Khanate by the Russian Empire, Fergana has a relatively short but vibrant history. Originally named New Margilan, it was situated 12 kilometers from Margilan and quickly became the administrative center of the Fergana region.
The city’s foundation was marked by the construction of a military fortress, which occupied a significant area and became the heart of the new settlement. Streets radiated out in a semicircle from this central fortress, and a vast park was laid out in the city center, adding to its charm. Early architectural landmarks included the Governor’s House, which now serves as the drama theater, the House of the Governor Assistant, and the Military Assembly, now known as the House of Officers. In 1907, the town was renamed Skobelev, and in 1924, it adopted its current name, Fergana.
While Fergana may lack ancient architecture and historical monuments, it more than makes up for it with its picturesque and unique aesthetic. The city is renowned for its venerable trees, including plane trees, poplars, and oaks, which have transformed Fergana into a garden city. These trees line the streets, providing shade and enhancing the city’s beauty.
The suburbs of Fergana are equally captivating, known for their scenic beauty and recreational spots. In the foothills of the Alai Range, surrounded by lush gardens and vineyards, lies the village of Chimen. This village is famous for its healing mineral springs, which have led to the establishment of the spa resort «Chimen,» the largest health resort in Central Asia.
Approximately 55 kilometers from Fergana is Shakhimardan, a picturesque area and a traditional recreational spot for the residents of Margilan and Fergana. Known as the «Lord of the Peoples,» Shakhimardan offers stunning natural landscapes and a serene environment, making it a popular destination for relaxation and leisure.
