We'll be spending five days in Almaty and are thinking about visiting Charyn Canyon. Some people compare it to the Grand Canyon, while others say it's overhyped because of social media. Since it's quite a long drive, I'm wondering whether it's genuinely worth dedicating an entire day to.
I wouldn't compare it to the Grand Canyon because they're completely different places. Charyn is much smaller, but that's actually one of its advantages. You don't just admire it from viewpoints—you walk down into the canyon and become part of the landscape.
The colours change constantly depending on the sunlight, and the rock formations look almost sculpted. We reached the Valley of Castles early in the morning and spent nearly three hours there without noticing how quickly time had passed.
Is the walk difficult? We'll be travelling with my parents, who are in their late sixties.
The trail itself isn't technically difficult, but remember that whatever goes down must eventually come back up. The climb isn't very long, yet it can feel demanding on a hot summer afternoon.
I'd strongly recommend starting early, carrying plenty of water and taking your time. There are benches along parts of the route, so there's no need to rush.
What surprised us most wasn't the canyon itself but how peaceful it became once we left the main viewpoint. Most people walk to the river, take a few photos and head back. We continued exploring some of the side paths and suddenly found ourselves almost alone. It completely changed the experience. We visited in October, and I'd honestly choose autumn over summer if you have the option. The temperatures were comfortable for walking, the colours of the canyon were beautiful in the softer light, and there were noticeably fewer visitors than we'd expected.
