If you happen to be in Samarkand when a performance is scheduled, I highly recommend attending a show at the Historical Costume Theater. You can check their website at elmerosi.uz.
The theater was founded by Uzbekistan's first ambassador to Russia, who is also a historian. After returning to his hometown of Samarkand, he established this unique cultural venue. While it’s not exactly a traditional play, it is undeniably beautiful and captivating.
The costumes showcased during the performances are meticulously reconstructed from various historical and cultural periods of Samarkand, drawing from a wide range of sources to ensure authenticity.
The most popular production, "Along the Silk Road," offers an enchanting exploration of the customs and traditions of Central Asia's inhabitants, spanning from ancient times to the present day. Before the performance begins, some of the costumes are displayed in the theater’s foyer, giving the audience a chance to admire their intricate details up close.
It’s a fascinating and immersive experience that’s well worth including in your visit to Samarkand.
Wow. I really want to see it! How do you buy tickets? Online? Or is it possible to purchase them in person a couple of days in advance?
Our guide brought us there. We bought tickets on-site. The audience included French, English, and Japanese visitors.
