OrdaBasy Square lies in Shymkent’s oldest district, surrounded by Independence Park and the ancient Citadel, with the Koshkar-Ata River flowing nearby. Close to the square is the OrdaBasy Mosque, named after the square itself. Over 150 years ago, this location was home to an old market, later moved to another part of the city.
At the center of OrdaBasy Square stands the imposing three-sided “Zher-Ana” (Mother Earth) monument, reaching a height of 34 meters. Atop the monument is an 8-meter statue of a woman symbolizing Mother Earth, a piece often referred to as the Monument of Independence. The base of the stele is adorned with national patterns, symbolizing unity among the peoples of Kazakhstan. On each of the monument’s three faces, wise words are inscribed from Kazakhstan’s most respected biys—wise counselors of the khans—who each belonged to one of the three main Kazakh tribes: Tole Bi, Kazybek Bi, and Aiteke Bi. Incidentally, three city streets named after these revered figures originate from OrdaBasy Square, underscoring their lasting legacy.
This historic square often serves as the starting point for tourists exploring Shymkent, with many first heading to Independence Park, which is just a short walk away.
