Itinerary

Day 1Georgia-Armenia border point Sadakhlo-Bagratashen – Dilijan – Lake Sevan – Sevanavank – Yerevan

After crossing the Sadakhlo–Bagratashen border, you will be warmly welcomed by your Armenian guide and driver, marking the beginning of an unforgettable cultural journey through Armenia. Your first destination is the forested resort town of Dilijan, often referred to as “the Armenian Switzerland” for its fresh alpine air and scenic green landscapes. Here, you will visit Haghartsin Monastery, a beautifully secluded 10th–13th-century religious complex nestled deep in the forest. Its name, meaning “Dance of the Eagles,” reflects the grace and serenity of its setting and the spiritual history within its medieval walls.

Next, continue your scenic drive along the shores of Lake Sevan, often called “The Jewel of Armenia.” One of the world’s largest high-altitude freshwater lakes, Sevan dazzles visitors with its deep blue waters framed by mountains, alpine meadows, and ancient monasteries. You’ll stop at Sevanavank Monastery, founded in the 9th century on what was once an island and is now a peninsula. The twin churches—Surb Arakelots and Surb Karapet—are built of dark volcanic tuff, blending into the rocky landscape. From here, panoramic views over the lake and distant snowy peaks are truly breathtaking.

Continue your journey to Noradus, a unique village known for having the largest field of khachkars (intricately carved cross-stones) in Armenia. With nearly 900 cross-stones dating from different historical periods, this open-air cemetery offers an extraordinary glimpse into Armenia’s medieval spiritual art.

Arrive in Yerevan in the evening, the lively capital of Armenia. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest after your day of travel and exploration. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 2Yerevan

Begin your day with a guided tour of Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest cities, with a history stretching back to 782 BC. Known as the “Pink City” due to the color of its volcanic stone buildings, Yerevan blends ancient heritage with modern urban life. Start your exploration at the monumental Cascade Complex, a massive stairway made up of 572 steps and adorned with fountains, sculptures, and gardens. Climb to the top or ride the escalator inside the structure to reach a panoramic viewing platform. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the capital and the distant silhouette of Mount Ararat.

Walk along Abovyan Avenue, one of the city’s oldest streets, lined with historical buildings, cafés, and boutiques. Visit Republic Square, the beating heart of Yerevan, surrounded by grand Soviet-era architecture and the National History Museum.

If your visit falls on a weekend, don’t miss the Vernissage flea market, where local artisans sell handmade crafts, carpets, paintings, jewelry, and Soviet memorabilia—an ideal place for souvenir shopping.

Next, drive to Tsitsernakaberd, a hilltop memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The serene park and museum provide a powerful and moving insight into one of the nation’s most tragic historical chapters.

Wrap up the day with a visit to the Megeryan Carpet Factory, where you’ll witness the traditional art of Armenian rug weaving. Learn about the symbolism behind each design and view rare antique carpets from across the regions of Armenia.

In the evening, enjoy a delightful dinner accompanied by a traditional folklore show, showcasing Armenia’s rich music and dance heritage. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 3:Yerevan – Garni – Geghard – Etchmiadzin – Yerevan

After breakfast, set off for a day of spiritual and architectural discovery. Your first stop is the ancient village of Garni, home to the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia. Built in the 1st century AD and dedicated to the sun god Mihr, Garni Temple stands proudly on a cliff edge, offering magnificent views of the Azat River Gorge. This Greco-Roman-style monument, with its classical columns and symmetrical design, provides a rare glimpse into Armenia’s pre-Christian past.

Next, head to the nearby Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled within towering cliffs. Partially carved into the rock face, this 4th-century monastic complex derives its name from the “Holy Lance” that once pierced the side of Christ. Inside, admire intricate carvings, sacred springs, and hauntingly beautiful acoustics that have echoed with centuries of chant.

Continue your pilgrimage to Etchmiadzin, the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Visit the Etchmiadzin Cathedral—regarded as the world’s oldest cathedral—which serves as the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians, the head of the national church. Although the cathedral is under renovation, its importance as a pilgrimage site remains undiminished, and the surrounding churches and museums offer deep insight into the religious history of the country.

Return to Yerevan in the evening. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4:Yerevan – Khor Virap – Areni – Noravank – Yerevan

Today, drive south to one of Armenia’s most significant religious landmarks—Khor Virap Monastery. Located near the Turkish border, this sacred site is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a deep underground cell for 13 years. His eventual release and conversion of King Tiridates III led to Armenia’s adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. The monastery offers unparalleled views of Mount Ararat, making it a favorite stop for photography and contemplation.

Continue to Areni, a quaint village renowned for its winemaking heritage. Here, you will enjoy a wine tasting at a local cellar, sampling pomegranate, apricot, and grape wines made using ancient techniques passed down through generations. Areni is also famous for the Areni-1 cave complex, where the world’s oldest known winery was discovered.

Next, drive to the nearby Noravank Monastery, perched above a deep gorge lined with striking red rock formations. This 13th-century monastic complex was a thriving religious and cultural hub under the patronage of the powerful Orbelian princes. Admire the beautiful Surb Astvatsatsin Church, known for its narrow exterior staircase, and take in the surrounding landscape that turns fiery red at sunset.

Return to Yerevan in the evening for a final night in Armenia’s capital. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5:Yerevan – departure

After breakfast, enjoy some free time to explore Yerevan’s bustling local markets, where you can shop for traditional sweets, dried fruits, spices, and handmade souvenirs. This is a great opportunity to pick up last-minute gifts or savor one final taste of Armenian hospitality.

Check out from your hotel by noon. Your driver will then transfer you to Zvartnots International Airport for your departure, bringing your inspiring Armenian adventure to a close.
