Itinerary

Day 1Tbilisi – Armenian Border – Haghpat Monastery – Lake Sevan – Sevanavank – Yerevan

Your adventure begins at 9:00 AM when our professional driver will pick you up from your hotel in Tbilisi. You will then travel toward the “Sadakhlo-Bagratashen” border crossing between Georgia and Armenia. Upon crossing the border, you will be warmly greeted by your Armenian guide and driver, who will accompany you on this immersive journey through Armenia’s ancient cultural landscapes.

Your first major destination is the Lori region, home to the magnificent Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, Haghpat is a breathtaking example of traditional Armenian architecture, nestled on a hillside overlooking the serene Debed River valley. This monastery was strategically located to offer tranquility and seclusion for the monks, surrounded by lush forests and dramatic mountain views. You’ll have time to explore the monastery’s intricately carved stone façades and peaceful courtyards, feeling the deep spiritual heritage permeating the site.

Afterwards, continue through the scenic town of Dilijan, often called the “Switzerland of Armenia” for its verdant pine forests and cool mountain air. Your next stop is Lake Sevan, known as “The Jewel of Armenia” and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. The lake’s stunning shoreline features a dramatic mix of dense woods, rugged white cliffs, mountain steppes, and vibrant alpine meadows. Here, you will visit Sevanavank Monastery, perched on a peninsula jutting into the lake. This historic complex, constructed from distinctive black volcanic tuff, includes two small churches—Surb Arakelots and Surb Karapet—surrounded by hundreds of carved khachkars (cross-stones). The panoramic views from Sevanavank are nothing short of spectacular: the expansive lake is framed by snow-capped mountains stretching beyond the horizon, creating a picture-perfect scene.

As the day winds down, you will drive to Yerevan, Armenia’s lively capital city, where you will check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

Duration: Approximately 9 to 10 hours of sightseeing
Distance covered: Around 370 kilometers

Day 2Yerevan – Khor Virap Monastery – Noravank Canyon – Areni Wine Region – Yerevan

Following a hearty breakfast, your journey on day two begins with a visit to the iconic Khor Virap Monastery. Situated in the Ararat Plain, this historic monastery is renowned for its deep spiritual significance. According to Armenian legend, St. Gregory the Illuminator—the patron saint who brought Christianity to Armenia—was imprisoned for 13 years in a deep pit beneath the monastery before King Tiridates III embraced Christianity, making Armenia the first nation to officially adopt the faith. From Khor Virap, you will enjoy unrivaled views of the majestic Mount Ararat, a symbol deeply intertwined with Armenian culture and identity.

Next, you will head to the dramatic Noravank Monastery, located on a narrow ledge within a deep gorge formed by the Amaghu River. The red cliffs surrounding Noravank create a stunning natural amphitheater, adding to the mystical atmosphere of this 13th-century religious complex. Known for its elaborate stone carvings and intricate khachkars, Noravank was once a major spiritual and cultural center, hosting religious leaders and scholars.

Your afternoon includes a stop in Areni, a village famous for its ancient caves and rich winemaking traditions. This region gained international attention when archaeologists discovered the world’s oldest known leather shoe and evidence of ancient wine production dating back over 6,000 years. You will have the opportunity to visit a local winery, sample delicious Armenian wines, and learn about traditional winemaking methods passed down through generations.

Return to Yerevan in the evening for a relaxing overnight stay.

Duration: Approximately 7 to 8 hours of touring
Distance covered: Approximately 240 kilometers

Day 3:Yerevan – Garni Fortress – Geghard Monastery – Armenian Border – Tbilisi

On the final day, your tour starts at 8:30 AM with a scenic drive to Garni, a picturesque village best known for its ancient pagan temple. The Garni Fortress is the only surviving Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia, dating back to the 1st century AD. It stands as a remarkable testament to Armenia’s pre-Christian history and was spared destruction when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century. The temple overlooks the Azat River Gorge, offering beautiful vistas of the surrounding natural landscape.

Next, you will visit the extraordinary Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO-listed site partially carved into the cliffs of a towering canyon. Founded in the 4th century, Geghard is renowned for its rock-cut churches and intricate medieval frescoes. The monastery’s unique architecture harmonizes with the dramatic cliffs, creating a breathtaking setting steeped in history and spirituality. The name “Geghard,” meaning “spear,” refers to the sacred lance believed to have pierced Christ during the Crucifixion, which was once kept here.

Returning to Yerevan, you will embark on a brief city tour. Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, is famously known as the “Pink City” due to its distinctive volcanic tuff buildings. The tour includes a visit to the iconic Cascade Monument, a monumental stairway soaring 118 meters high with 572 steps. From here, enjoy panoramic views of the cityscape featuring landmarks like the Opera House, Republic Square, Swan Lake, and the majestic Mount Ararat in the distance. Stroll along Abovyan Avenue, soaking in Yerevan’s vibrant street life and rich cultural atmosphere.

By early afternoon, you will depart Armenia via the Bagratashen-Sadakhlo border crossing and return to your hotel in Tbilisi, concluding your immersive three-day journey through Armenia’s historic and natural wonders.
