Itinerary

Day 1Tbilisi – Gori – Uplistsikhe – Borjomi – Akhaltsikhe

Your journey begins in the morning, when you meet your friendly driver and knowledgeable guide in Tbilisi. Depart the capital city and head west toward the town of Gori, the birthplace of one of the 20th century’s most controversial figures—Joseph Stalin. Here, you’ll explore the Stalin Museum, which houses over 60,000 exhibits, including personal belongings, photographs, and the original modest house where Stalin was born. A major highlight is his bulletproof personal railway carriage, used for official trips to places like Yalta and Potsdam.

Next, continue to the cave town of Uplistsikhe, a remarkable ancient settlement carved directly into the cliffs above the Mtkvari River. Dating back to the early Iron Age and flourishing during the Hellenistic period, Uplistsikhe is notable for its unique blend of pagan and Christian architecture. Wander through rock-cut halls, chambers, wine cellars, and even an ancient theater, all while soaking in panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

The tour proceeds to the serene resort town of Borjomi, world-renowned for its curative mineral springs. Stroll through Borjomi Central Park, where you can taste the famed mineral water straight from the source and enjoy a peaceful walk under centuries-old trees along the scenic river.

Your day ends in the charming town of Akhaltsikhe, where you’ll stay overnight. The town is best known for the beautifully restored Rabat Fortress, which you’ll explore in the morning. Rest well and prepare for another inspiring day ahead.

Day 2Akhaltsikhe – Khertvisi Fortress – Vardzia – Tbilisi

After breakfast, begin your second day with a guided tour of Rabat Fortress, the crown jewel of Akhaltsikhe. Set atop a hill overlooking the Potskhovi River, this ancient fortified complex boasts a rich blend of architectural styles, reflecting its multicultural past. The name “Rabat” comes from Arabic and means “fortified place,” and it truly lives up to its name with high stone walls, towers, and a restored citadel housing museums, churches, and gardens.

Continue your drive through the scenic southern landscapes of Georgia, making a short photo stop at the historic Khertvisi Fortress. Dating back to the 10th–11th centuries, this fortress once served as a strategic military stronghold along the Silk Road and stands proudly above the confluence of two rivers.

The highlight of your tour awaits at Vardzia, a spectacular cave monastery complex that stretches over 500 meters along the cliffside. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries under the rule of King George III and his daughter, Queen Tamar, Vardzia was intended to defend Georgia’s southern frontier. What remains today is a massive, multi-leveled rock-cut city with more than 600 chambers, including churches, living quarters, chapels, wine cellars, libraries, and an intricate system of tunnels and stairways. The heart of Vardzia is the Church of the Dormition, known for its well-preserved frescoes of Queen Tamar herself.

After ample time to explore the mystical corridors of this once-thriving royal refuge, begin your return journey to Tbilisi, reflecting on the awe-inspiring ancient fortresses and enduring legacy of Georgia’s cliff-carved wonders.
