After soaking in this whimsical site, head to Borjomi, a serene town nestled in the forested valleys of central Georgia. Known for its healing mineral waters and fresh mountain air, Borjomi is the perfect place to relax after a day of exploration. Overnight in a local hotel.
After breakfast, take a scenic drive through the mountainous countryside to Akhaltsikhe, where you’ll visit the remarkable Rabati Fortress. This multicultural architectural complex has been reconstructed to reflect its original medieval grandeur, blending Georgian, Turkish, and Armenian influences in its towers, churches, and mosques.
Continue your route toward Vardzia, stopping briefly at the historic Khertvisi Fortress, one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia, dating back to the 10th–11th centuries. Set dramatically at the confluence of two rivers, it once controlled important trade routes in the region.
Finally, arrive at the breathtaking Vardzia Cave Monastery, an extraordinary 12th-century site carved into a cliffside during the reign of Queen Tamar. This sprawling complex once contained over 600 rooms, including chapels, tunnels, libraries, wine cellars, and monk dwellings. Walk along the ancient paths, marvel at medieval frescoes, and imagine life in this mountain sanctuary.
In the evening, return to Borjomi for another night’s stay.
