Route in brief:

Tbilisi - Rabati fortress - Khertvisi - Vardzia - Tbilisi

Step back in time on a captivating one-day tour to Vardzia and Rabati Fortress from Tbilisi — a perfect blend of history, mystery, and breathtaking scenery. This unforgettable journey takes you deep into southern Georgia, where towering fortresses and ancient cave cities reveal the nation’s dramatic past. Begin your adventure in Akhaltsikhe with a visit to the beautifully restored Rabati Fortress, a medieval stronghold blending various architectural styles. Continue to the awe-inspiring cave monastery of Vardzia, carved into the cliffs of the Erusheti mountains, once a spiritual and defensive center during Queen Tamar’s golden age. With scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and centuries-old architecture at every turn, this tour is an essential experience for anyone eager to uncover Georgia’s historic heart in just one day.

08:00 AM – Departure from Tbilisi
Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel to begin your full-day journey to southern Georgia. Settle in for a scenic drive that winds through the picturesque countryside and past the spa town of Borjomi, famous for its mineral waters.

Mid-Morning – Explore Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe
Arrive in Akhaltsikhe, where you’ll explore the impressive Rabati Fortress. Perched on a hill beside the Potskhovi River, this fortress has stood since the 9th century and has undergone several restorations. The name “Rabati” comes from the Arabic word for “fortified place.” Marvel at the blend of architectural styles — from Ottoman and Georgian to Byzantine — as you stroll through cobblestone courtyards, visit the mosque, bathhouse, and museum, and take in panoramic views from the fortress walls.

Midday – Photo Stop at Khertvisi Fortress
Continue toward Vardzia with a brief stop at the 10th-century Khertvisi Fortress. One of the oldest fortifications in Georgia, it stands majestically at the confluence of two rivers and offers a dramatic photo opportunity.

Afternoon – Discover the Cave City of Vardzia
Arrive at the breathtaking cave monastery of Vardzia. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries during the reigns of King George III and Queen Tamar, Vardzia served as a vital defense against invaders and a spiritual center for monks. Carved into a massive cliffside, this sprawling complex once contained over 6,000 rooms across multiple levels, including chapels, wine cellars, libraries, and living quarters. Wander through tunnels and staircases, visit the main Church of the Dormition with its 12th-century frescoes, and immerse yourself in the silence and grandeur of this rock-hewn wonder.

Evening – Return to Tbilisi
After an enriching day of exploration, begin your return journey to Tbilisi through Georgia’s tranquil valleys and rugged landscapes. Arrive in the evening and enjoy a convenient drop-off at your hotel.

I absolutely loved the Vardzia and Rabati Fortress tour! The day was packed with incredible sights, and I was amazed by the richness of Georgian history carved into the cliffs at Vardzia. Walking through the cave city felt like stepping back in time. The Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe was beautifully restored, and the blend of architectural styles was fascinating. Our guide, Niko, was fantastic — his passion for Georgian culture and history truly brought the sites to life. He shared stories and legends that made every stop even more memorable. The drive through Borjomi’s lush landscapes was relaxing and scenic. It was a long day, but well worth every minute. Highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting a deep dive into Georgia’s heritage!

The one-day tour to Vardzia and Rabati Fortress exceeded all my expectations. From the moment we left Tbilisi, the journey was scenic and comfortable. The highlight was definitely Vardzia — the complexity of the cave monastery amazed me. The tunnels, chapels, and rooms carved into the rock felt like a hidden world. I also enjoyed the brief stop at Khertvisi Fortress; it was a great chance to stretch and take photos. Although we didn’t have a guide here, the information provided at each site was clear and helpful. Visiting Rabati Fortress was a great introduction to Georgia’s layered history, with its mix of cultures. This tour offered a perfect blend of natural beauty and fascinating history in just one day.
