Navoi, often described as a real oasis in the steppe, is the youngest city in Uzbekistan. Its construction began in 1958 following a government decree, and the city was named after the renowned Uzbek poet, scientist, and statesman, Alisher Navoi. Despite its relatively recent establishment, Navoi has quickly developed into a significant economic hub and industrial center in western Uzbekistan, serving as a gateway to desert development.
Although Navoi itself is a young city, the surrounding area boasts a rich and ancient history. The region was once a crucial part of the Great Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchange between the East and the West. Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts and traces of ancient civilizations, including those of the Saka, Khorezm, and Bactria cultures. These findings underscore the area’s long-standing importance as a cultural and economic crossroads.
One of the most fascinating historical sites near Navoi is the Sarmish Gorge, located 45 kilometers from the city. This gorge is often referred to as «the biggest stone mural gallery in the world,» spanning a two-kilometer area and featuring nearly four thousand petroglyphs from various periods. Among these ancient rock carvings are intriguing depictions that some researchers interpret as representations of «ancient astronauts.» The Sarmish Gorge is also known for occasional reports of anomalous phenomena, attracting the attention of UFO enthusiasts and researchers.
Today, Navoi is one of Uzbekistan’s leading industrial centers. The city is home to several major industrial enterprises, including the Navoi Mining & Metallurgical Combinat, which is renowned for its gold production. The JSC “Navoiazot” specializes in producing mineral fertilizers, ammonia, and artificial Nitron fiber, while the city’s electrochemical plant and Navoi Hydropower Station contribute significantly to the local economy. Additionally, Navoi hosts the largest cement plant in Uzbekistan, JSC “Kyzylkumcement,” and numerous other industrial projects of national importance.
Navoi is a diverse and vibrant city with a population of over 160,000 people. The demographic composition includes Uzbeks (73.2%), Russians (16.5%), Kazakhs (1.3%), and other nationalities (9%). This cultural diversity contributes to the city’s dynamic social fabric and economic growth.
