The road to Saimaluu Tash is accessible only about one month a year—roughly from mid-July to mid-August. For the rest of the year, the massif lies buried under snow. Even in summer, it is not uncommon to encounter snowfall, rain, or hail here, and thick layers of perennial snowfields persist in the ravines and mountain passes.
The national park is situated in a remote mountainous region south of the sizable settlement of Kazarman. To reach the valley, you must take the Kazarman–Bayetovo highway, then turn south about 10 km from the starting point and continue until you see the signpost.
Saimaluu Tash valley lies at around 3,000 meters above sea level. The ascent by car is impossible, so you will need to hike on foot for 4 to 6 hours. Alternatively, travelers can opt for a horseback route.
The journey on foot from Kazarman to the site takes a full day. Prepare yourself—the scorching sun will be your constant companion. Trees do not grow at this altitude; only hardy shrubs and thorns survive.
From the entrance to the reserve, you will walk about 7 kilometers, gaining approximately 1,300 meters in elevation. The trail is visible throughout the route, so you won’t need to rely heavily on a map. Obstacles are few: crossing a shallow stream on logs and walking over melting snowfields. A large river is crossed by a proper bridge—everything is quite civilized.
Speaking of water, you can fill your bottles at natural springs. Be careful not to confuse them with streams, as livestock graze in the gorge during summer—there is a risk of encountering the same fate as Przhevalsky.
The petroglyphs are scattered around high-mountain lakes. To explore the entire area, it’s best to stay overnight up there. There are no signposts in the park, nor are there any detailed maps. Finding the most interesting images is entirely up to you, which adds to the thrill of the adventure.
La strada per Saimaluu Tash è accessibile solo per circa un mese all’anno — approssimativamente da metà luglio a metà agosto. Per il resto dell’anno il massiccio è coperto dalla neve. Anche d’estate non è raro incontrare nevicate, pioggia o grandine, e negli avvallamenti e nei passi montani si trovano spesse coltri di neve perenne che non si sciolgono mai.
Il parco nazionale si trova in una regione montuosa remota, a sud del grande centro abitato di Kazarman. Per raggiungere la valle, bisogna prendere la strada Kazarman–Bayetovo, poi svoltare a sud dopo circa 10 km dal punto di partenza e proseguire fino a incontrare l’indicazione.
La valle di Saimaluu Tash si trova a circa 3.000 metri sul livello del mare. La salita in auto non è possibile, quindi sarà necessario percorrerla a piedi in 4-6 ore. In alternativa, i viaggiatori possono scegliere un percorso a cavallo.
Il viaggio a piedi da Kazarman fino al sito richiede un’intera giornata. Preparati: il sole cocente sarà il tuo compagno costante. A questa altitudine gli alberi non crescono; sopravvivono solo arbusti resistenti e cespugli spinosi.
Dall’ingresso della riserva si percorrono circa 7 chilometri a piedi, con un dislivello di circa 1.300 metri. Il sentiero è visibile per tutto il percorso, quindi non sarà necessario affidarsi troppo a una mappa. Gli ostacoli sono pochi: attraversare un ruscello poco profondo su tronchi e camminare su nevai in scioglimento. Un grande fiume è attraversato da un ponte vero e proprio — tutto abbastanza civile.
A proposito di acqua, puoi rifornirti alle sorgenti naturali. Fai attenzione a non confonderle con i ruscelli, poiché d’estate nel canyon pascolano animali domestici — c’è il rischio di incorrere nello stesso destino di Przhevalsky.
I petroglifi sono sparsi intorno ai laghi d’alta montagna. Per esplorare l’intera area, è consigliabile fermarsi a dormire lassù. Non ci sono cartelli nel parco, né mappe dettagliate. Trovare le immagini più interessanti dipende interamente da te, il che aggiunge un pizzico di avventura.
