Among Georgia’s national holidays, the Day of National Unity stands out as the most poignant, solemnly honoring the memory of 21 innocent civilians who lost their lives on April 9, 1989, during a peaceful anti-Soviet demonstration.
This tragic event, often referred to as the Tbilisi Massacre, the April 9 Tragedy, or the Tbilisi Tragedy, unfolded when Red Army soldiers violently intervened to disperse thousands of protestors gathered outside the Government House on Rustaveli Avenue. In the chaos that ensued, 21 individuals were killed, with a heartbreaking 17 of them being women, the youngest victim just 16 years old. Additionally, hundreds of activists sustained injuries, many requiring urgent medical assistance.
The harrowing events of April 9 not only marked a dark chapter in Georgia’s history but also galvanized the nation’s determination to seek independence from the Soviet Union. Just two years later, on April 9, 1991, Georgia proudly adopted its Declaration of Independence, a pivotal moment that would shape its future.
Today, the Day of National Unity is observed with deep respect and reflection. Citizens gather to lay flowers and light candles at the April 9 memorial, located in front of the Georgian Parliament Building.
