International Women`s Day

8 March

International Women’s Day is one of the most cherished public holidays in Georgia, with its origins deeply rooted in the women’s rights movements of the early 20th century.

The first celebration of Women’s Day took place in 1911, following a proposal by Clara Zetkin at a socialist conference in Copenhagen the previous year. With the granting of voting rights to women in Soviet Russia in 1917, Women’s Day was officially declared a national holiday. The significance of the day grew in the late 1960s when it was embraced by the Western feminist movement, culminating in the United Nations recognizing International Women’s Day in 1977.

Even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, International Women’s Day has continued to be a beloved celebration in Georgia, resonating with people around the world. However, in many post-Soviet countries, including Georgia, the holiday takes on a particularly festive character. On this day, it is customary for men to express their appreciation for the women in their lives by showering them with flowers, thoughtful gifts, and heartfelt compliments.

In workplaces across the country, companies often organize special events to honor their female employees, creating an atmosphere of gratitude and celebration. Throughout the day, families and friends gather to host feasts, sharing delicious meals and joyful moments together. The days leading up to and following International Women’s Day are often filled with concerts, artistic performances, public speeches, and elaborate toasts that further highlight the achievements and contributions of women.
