Bayanaul National Park is a remarkable natural reserve located approximately 100 kilometers from Ekibastuz in Kazakhstan’s Pavlodar region. Established in 1985, the park is widely regarded as one of the most scenic locations in Kazakhstan and holds the distinction of being included among the country’s specially protected natural areas. The park was created with the mission of preserving and restoring the unique flora and fauna of the region.
Spanning over 68,000 hectares, Bayanaul became Kazakhstan’s first national park. Its diverse landscape features not only forests but also steppes, forest-steppes, and meadows. The park is home to several freshwater lakes, including Zhasybai, Sabyndykol, Birzhankol, and Toraigyr, as well as numerous smaller bodies of water. These lakes are home to various species of fish. The park’s highest point is Mount Akbet, rising 1,027 meters above sea level.
There are various legends surrounding Bayanaul. According to one, it is the birthplace of the beautiful Bayan Sulu, often likened to the Kazakh version of Juliet. Another interpretation of the name suggests that it comes from the words “bayanda bolsyn, bayan ola,” meaning “happy hills” or “prosperity.”
The park is rich in biodiversity, with over 450 plant species and 40 types of animals. Among the plants found here are Bayanaul pine, black alder, aspen, rosehip, and raspberry, with five species included in the Red Book of endangered species. The animal population includes mammals, reptiles, and artiodactyls such as the argali, a species also listed in the Red Book. The park is home to around 50 bird species.
One of Bayanaul’s great advantages is that it is open to the public without the need for special permits, making it accessible for walking and exploring.
