The Issyk-Kul Historical and Cultural Museum, situated in the heart of Cholpon-Ata, is about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) from Lake Issyk-Kul and the Rukh Ordo Cultural Center. Established during the Soviet era, the museum’s facade and exhibits largely retain their 1980s appearance, giving visitors a glimpse into the past.
The museum’s collection covers the key moments in the history of the people who lived around Issyk-Kul, near present-day Cholpon-Ata. While it may not offer the grandeur of museums in larger cities, its exhibits are well-curated and worth exploring. Particularly impressive are the ancient artifacts, including jewelry and household items recovered from the lakebed, as well as leather-made ancient vessels.
Visitors will also learn the fascinating origins behind the names of nearby villages such as Ananyevo, Grigorievka, and Semenovka. The museum itself is compact, consisting of just a few themed rooms. These exhibits highlight the flora and fauna of the Issyk-Kul region, items used by nomads from the 10th to the 20th century, Buddhist relics, ancient coins, and weaponry. Additionally, there are smaller displays dedicated to the Epic of Manas, the significance of Lake Issyk-Kul, traditional arts and crafts, musical instruments, local cultural figures, traditional clothing, and even the Second World War.
