The «Rukh Ordo» Cultural Center named after Chingiz Aitmatov is a unique complex located on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, in the city of Cholpon-Ata. The center is dedicated to one of the most renowned Kyrgyz figures, Chingiz Torekulovich Aitmatov.
The center is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during the winter months, and from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM in the summer. Admission is 500 som, and visitors can join a free guided walking tour that departs periodically from the entrance. These tours, which last about 90 minutes and are conducted in Russian, are highly recommended as they offer essential insights that may be missed otherwise.
Founded in 2002, the center occupies a section of land that was once part of a government residence. Spread across a vast park, the complex symbolizes the harmony of the world’s major religions, represented by five white chapels that stand equidistant from each other. These chapels represent Orthodoxy, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and Catholicism. Additionally, there’s a pyramid symbolizing the ancient Tengri religion, a fascinating inclusion as Tengriism is not widely understood. The chapels, though similar in appearance, are distinguished by the religious symbols on their rooftops, emphasizing the equality of all faiths. Inside, visitors will find religious artifacts such as icons and sacred texts.
The exhibits at Rukh Ordo are strikingly eclectic. Statues of characters from Aitmatov’s works sit alongside a sculpture of Nursultan Nazarbayev, marble figures of Hera and Aphrodite, and a Slavic forest spirit from Russian folklore. Aristotle is placed next to wise men in Eastern robes, and Copernicus makes an appearance as well. While the collection may seem random, it’s undeniably beautiful. Two optical illusion paintings, in particular, are a must-see within one of the pavilions.
The grounds of the complex are lush and picturesque, with manicured pathways, clear signage, and intriguing art installations at every turn. The park is home to a wide array of sculptures that blend seamlessly into the landscape, and there are several exhibition halls. One hall features a reconstructed Kyrgyz village with a large yurt, a dry pool, and a display of traditional headwear. Another showcases the works of local artists. There is also a memorial house dedicated to Chingiz Aitmatov, filled with sculptures inspired by his works, as well as a statue of the writer himself seated on a bench—a popular spot for selfies.
One of the highlights of Rukh Ordo is its stunning pier on Lake Issyk-Kul, considered one of the most beautiful on the lake. At the end of the pier, four elegant pavilions represent the four cardinal directions and the four seasons. Legend has it that walking around the pier clockwise brings wisdom, while walking counterclockwise grants youth.
Additionally, the center is home to a «Stone Exhibition,» where visitors can browse and purchase natural, unprocessed stones, gemstones, and jewelry. The collection caters to all tastes and budgets, making it a favorite spot for souvenir shopping.
