Saimaluu-Tash Reserve Museum, Jalal-Abad Region

Saimaluu-Tash, located in the Jalal-Abad Region of Kyrgyzstan, is one of the most remarkable petroglyph sites in Central Asia. Nestled high in the Fergana Range, it is accessible only after a several-day horseback journey from the village of Kazarman. This remote valley is home to more than 10,000 rock carvings—possibly even more—that offer a captivating glimpse into ancient cultures spanning thousands of years.

The petroglyphs at Saimaluu-Tash date back as early as 2000 or 3000 BCE, though some were created as recently as the 8th century CE, or later. In the Bronze Age, inhabitants of the region had a strong tradition of inscribing stones with symbols of their daily life and spiritual beliefs. By the Middle Ages, the site had transformed into a sacred place, where religious rites were performed. The carvings depict a wide range of subjects, from hunters pursuing ibex, deer, and wolves with bows and spears, to farmers working the land. There are also highly stylized images of the sun and moon, along with depictions of dancing demons, which hint at the spiritual significance the site held over centuries.

Because Saimaluu-Tash is so remote and only accessible during the summer months when the snow clears, it remains relatively under-researched. The Kyrgyz Institute of Archaeology has conducted periodic studies, but much of the site has yet to be thoroughly cataloged, leaving much of its history still to be uncovered. Despite its isolation, the petroglyphs at Saimaluu-Tash offer a unique and invaluable record of the region’s ancient inhabitants, their daily activities, and their spiritual beliefs.

For those willing to make the trek, Saimaluu-Tash presents a journey not just through the rugged mountains of Kyrgyzstan, but through millennia of history, offering an unparalleled connection to the lives of those who once inhabited the region.
